Okay, this is exactly why I suggested a couple of weeks ago that we create a 'sticky' topic in one of the main forums and mention what bands are currently rejected per (sub)genre...

But this raises an interesting question: Should such a band which is "technically" progressive but has - in the eyes of us prog critics - not the necessary artistic ambition be accepted in the archives and then recieve bad reviews ... or should it just not be accepted?

Really? I don't think so.

I saw them live in Milan a few years ago at the "Gods Of Metal", and trust me they are a black metal band with very very small prog elements!!!
The problem is that most black metal bands use
symphonic elements to "embellish" that sound. Cradle of Filth do that
quite efficiently, but I miss any serious artistic ambition in their
compositions. I really enjoy listening to them once in a while though.[/
QUOTE]

I think that's a good summation. Their music is often highly progressive
in its execution, but in its conception is decidedly lowbrow - aimed very
much at teenagers. With a different vocal style, more restrained lyrics and
very different cover artwork, they would probably qualify as prog metal.

I can maybe see some elements- longer songs, interesting music passages, but I have to say no also.
Pure black metalQUOTE]

Many black metal fans would skin you alive for this. They'd sooner say Neal Morse is black metal than Cradle of Filth.

Very good band, though, quite theatrical and the songs are really well-structured. Does that make them prog metal? I'm not going in there.

"A little diverse" may not be enough to qualify as prog. The prog metal team voted on Cradle of Filth a couple of months ago - you can see the results here:

Most people think they are symphonic black metal band but if you hear them with attention you'll see it has tempo changes and it's a little diverse. Ok, the vocals are black metal style but so what?

SO WHAT?
