Ahem...getting back to Yes!

Strangely enough I bought my first Yes CD today. I am also not keen on Anderson´s vocals (In fact I was one of those who were really anti-Yes!) but thought I should have something by them in my collection as they are considered to be one of the Big 5.

Well I bought The Ladder and I love it! It´s spiritually uplifting! After a few listens I don´t really mind Jon´s voice. For all the anti-Yes clan, The Ladder is the best place to start Clap

hahahha if you think that is spiritually uplifting I do recommend... after you do get a few more Yes albums

.. Tales From Topographic Oceans. That album can inspire you to take off to India with flowers in your hair......a very moving album... don't listen to all the crap thrown about in regards to it. Listen to it with open ears.....

TFTO is awesome. The Rhino remaster does it new justice. Great Mellotron work by Wakeman, too.

It has absolutely nothing to do with me wanting to be an elitist among the elitists though; I truly wish Magma or Gong were more popular, because they deserve it. The musicians are in every way the equals of Genesis or Yes (and I am the first to admit Yes has some of the top-virtuosos of prog). But Hillage/Malherbe/Howlett/Moerlen are among those very top virtuosos just as well. And the musicians of Magma are first class also; I just didn't list them because (with the exception of Christian Vander) the Magma line-up is even more unstable than the Gong line-up.
Also I NEVER said I don't like Yes; in fact I do. I don't listen to weird stuff all day. I believe in a "balanced diet" of prog. But they are by far not the pillars of prog. If Yes and Genesis were the only prog bands in the world I would have lost my interest in prog long ago; of that I am very sure. And it is a bit ridiculous that the major albums of Yes and Genesis are in the top 30, while some of the very best albums of Gong or Magma don't even appear on the list. But popularity always tends towards the mainstream; why, in fact that's exactly what "mainstream" means!
If Gong or Magma were, for some reason, more popular, I would not lose my interest in them and search for some more obscure artists to maintain my "elitist" status. But one will get you ten that it will start raining upwards first.

Yikes, this discussion/disagreement is still going which is great

I think as I stated previously we try to experiment with more extreme music.For some it undoubtedly works for others it's a definate no no.Baldfriede says that some of her favourite musicians can match the head honchos in the main prog bands that I cannot agree or disagree with.What I would say is that I have listened to most of the names mentiones and I found that their music didn't suit me.What has to be focused on here was the number of truly great albums the main prog bands gave us.As for Dr Know ' The Ladder' is a disaster of an album.The only redeeming tune on it is 'Homeworld' the rest is dire trite.To return to the main point, when Yes were at their uttermost best they gave the prog world 6 gems from TYA to GFTO. Their eponymous first was good,' Time and a Word ' showed the prog/rock world in 1969/70 that something great was about to emerge and it most certainly did.Fortunately for us all discussing this we still are actively enjoying great music.As a small side issue I saw 'The Musical Box' last night and although they played very well and sounded very much like Genesis something just didn't spark for me anyone seen them and felt that way??

It is plain nonsense to say I don't like "Relayer"; I stated it is my favourite Yes album, and it is the only Yes album which gets 5 stars from me! Nevertheless I critisize the way Anderson sings the line I mentioned. Singing aggressively is just not his forte. All the more I praise how he sings the final "Soon, oh soon the light". Here he can shine, and no-one will outdo him there. "Schuster, bleib' bei deinen Leisten!", as a German proverb says.

Who said you don't l;ike Relayer? Did I miss that? Is it not Andrson and Squire singing together? I still feel ...and will never change, that they sing the line brilliantly. Its like a beacon or a guding light through the insrumental turmoil.
