Gabriel was performing at the opening ceremonial ZOH Turin the song "Imagine" (Lennon). I think it was wonderful, better than original IMO. What do you think ?

I heard it. It was good and quite enjoyable but nothing special.
(Don't get me wrong, I love early Genesis and Peter Gabriel.)

He recorded Strawberry Fileds also in the late 70's for a movie called All This and World War II.

I'm watching it right now. It's amazing, but I don't think it quite beats the original.

I think it beats the original somewhat because of the crowd. As I said in the topic I posted on the lounge (I suppose I should've posted it here, oh well), Gabriel sitting there at his piano, some orchestra members in the back ground, the audience full of lights and all of the athletes from around the world swaying back and forth. The sight was really beautiful, brought a tear to my eyes.

As I've said in another topic regarding this...it was a simple
performance,without anything special...enjoyable in its own way...of
course,it doesn't win over Lennon's original and classic performance
and I don't think that was the purpose;Gabriel
did a normal act and nothing more...there is nothing (too) special into
this 3 minutes performance other than the one that he played an
immortal piece and transmited through music (while Yoko did through
words) the message of piece....

Horrible! It seems Gabriel is following the Collins' path... His performance was nothing special - a job done. It is all artificial and fake to me I used to love Gabriel a lot! And the song "Imagine" never did mean much to me, apart from being a good poetry, I always hated that performance, a pitiful hippie utopia... Now I sound like an old-fart punk, but I am always an iconoclast |

I love PG, but his curious choice of singing the first part of each verse an octave down, really made the song sound weird, and in the end it did not connect to me the way it SHOULD have...odd. Great opening ceremony though, by the way..

exactly how I felt I also liked how they announced him as "former lead singer of Genesis" as if people would know him by that and not his solo career. Whenever I talk about Genesis to friends I'm always like yaknow Peter Gabriel, then they know what I'm talking about not the other way around. Edited by video vertigo |

I thought it was bland. I just came here from Tony Levin's website (www.tonylevin.com) and he mentions that it was NOT him on bass, but maybe David Rhodes, the guitarrist. Also there's a funny story about how he didn' get to play at the Olympics. I couldn't tell who the drummer was.
