Maybe. It certainly has some prog elements, but overall, there's much more metal than prog. Not enough to add them to the archives. Still a great metal album though.

It's the only album I've ever listened to when something strange has happened - at the end of Moonchild !

The most progressive sounding Iron Maiden Album.

I agree with Ivan, at least prog realated but not really that prog.

Right now I'm listening Rime of the Ancient Mariner from the Live Arter Death album.

This trak is far more prog than what many icons of the genre did.

But the fat lady already sung and Iron Maiden was rejected by the majority of the members, so we must accept the rules of the game.

I'm actually cool with Maiden not being on this site. I don't take it as a bad thing. I'd rather classify them as power metal with some prog metal characteristics.

I still don't get what makes Queensryche prog and Maiden not prog though.

Very true - I don't get what makes Queensryche Prog, and I've listened to their first 3 albums in depth.

"Operation Mindcrime" (the 3rd) is supposed to be a masterpiece of Prog Metal and is widely held to be the first Prog Metal album (from what I've read), but on listening to it, it's no more progressive than Iron Maiden or Judas Priest were almost 10 years earlier, and certainly no real improvement on or channge in direction from their first two albums.

Maybe someone can explain?

Maybe it is all because Iron Maiden are widely known as metal icons (and honestly most of their latest work, especially albums following 7th son are definitely not prog) - well, it is very hard to imagine progfans - aquarians muttering "Lucifer's my name. Moonchild - hear the mandrake scream!!"

But 7th son is prog, Rime Of Ancient Mariner, Somewhere In Time and Hallowed Be Thy Name are definitely prog.

And well - I haven't heard much of Queensryche but it might be possible that they found it difficult to succeed in metal, since it has their established stars (Metallica(), Slayer) so they thought it would be a nice niche to be classified as prog metal, without real musical arguments.

I also think that queensryche and iron maiden are equally progressive...besides there is very little prog metal that is truly progressive..most of it could yes be described as power metal mixed with some prog elements...

Yes they have a very similar sound and Iron Maiden must have been a big influence on Queensryche. I expect it's because Operation Mindcrime is a concept album although I can't comment on that as I've never heard it. Judging from the comments here, I haven't missed much either.

Too late to change it now, I guess, because now everybody knows them as a prog metal band. Even though they're like.... well they don't really fit into any sub genre of metal (power, prog, extreme (black, death, thrash, etc.), alternative, hair, nu, etc.)... so umm... maybe melodic metal? Oh well, what does it matter.

I hardly think he calls rime of the ancient mariner for the most progressive track of all time but afterall shadow gallery did not exsist in the 80's when prog metal emerged and they are hardly regarded as prog metal icons...they are far too new to be called icons IMO...besides they dont really seem to bring anything new to the genre...a VERY typical atribute for prog metal bands

If a concept album is all it takes to be considered prog, then even Dimmu Borgir and Iced Earth would be prog, lol.

I can tell the Floyd influence in Mindcrime though, especially My Empty Room, which sounds sort of like it could've come off of Dark Side of the Moon. Anarchy X has very Maiden/Priest-esque leads as well.

But Empire... definetly not a prog album.
