I don't see why anyone is surprised at this... it wouldn't be a prog forum without ridiculous, snobbishly elitist opinions such as this. |

But you miss the point. They MIGHT line up and hair-swirl because they've got long hair. If they didn't have long hair, then they couldn't. And YES have released singles - so they can't be a proper prog band. The hair is enough reason for me to discount YES, of course - but I'm glad to see they got proper haircuts later in life.

Howe was able to give it (his hair) a nice little shake though, when he got that jittery little dance going that he is prone to do

I have a gripe about men in rock bands who stand either a) with legs
apart and guitar down low (á la Status Quo or Iron Maiden) or b) with
one of their legs resting on the amplifier and with the guitar a
slightly perpendicular angle. I also have a gripe (although
apparently they have do to it to keep in time) with drummers who twirl
their drumsticks all the time. I wasn't watching Guy Evans that
closely, but I don't think he twirled his sticks and I don't think Matt
Abts from Gov't did either.
Hair swirling/windmilling though, I agree, it's not a good thing for prog. |

There was a recorded incident at Newcastle City Hall in November 1972 whan Genesis (renowned at the time for long hair, and a suspicious look in the drummer's eyes)attempted synchronised hair swirling; it was during the somewhat aggressive coda to 'The Musical Box' that a "certain look" came over Steve Hackett's face, and he exchanged a glance with Gabriel & Rutherford... Mayhem broke out... Hackett fell off his stool and broke his glasses, Rutherford fled from the stage sobbing, with his hair tangled in his double neck Rickenbacker, Gabriel's old man mask slipped over his eyes causing him to fall from the stage into the lap of a somewhat surprised geography teacher from Crewe, Banks suffered contusions when 7 of the 12 strings of his acoustic guitar broke with a comedy *ping*..... and Collins was seen to be listening to sub-standard Tamla Motown singles, and making notes. They never attempted this again - even when they played the (much bootlegged) Metallica covers set in 1995. Lessons learned, I feel, lessons learned ![]() Edited by Jim Garten |

at the haircut of Brian. Using your logic Queen never was a proper prog. band. (Seriously, they were on their early albums.) |

Ah, but if you take that logic to its ultimate conclusion, then no band are prog bands - so much for logic. I try to avoid it wherever possible... |

^ and also, i need to justify my behaviour at discos and night clubs where i would gather a dozen or so of my (headbanger) friends and linear hairswirl to... say... 'the greatest love of all - Whitney Housten'.... See, there is a place for such behaviour.... Besides, Pink Floyd make for great hair swirling music......... |
