Genesis, they're good, Firth of Fifth, Get em Out By Friday, and Supper's Ready are amazing. But the band is vastly overrated.

And your reasoning for this? Overrated is such an annoying word when no reason is given. |
Lots of things about them annoy me, Peter Gabriels vocals most of the time, ie. on Battle of Epping Forest... and most notably I don't like Tony Banks keyboard work, theres jsut something about it that bothers me, I mean, Firth of Fifth is my favorite piano intro ever, but his keyboard sounds bother me.

But, "technique orientated" is part of prog...
I would agree that several times it becomes annoying, but that's the exception...

Hmm... Guess it's Dream Theater. They have a couple nice songs, but
they're only trying to be prog. I've never heard something totally
lousy, but Dream Theater just isn't that good.

not really.. for me its rock music that thinks outside the boundries of what rock should sound like. Technique is one way to achieve this but not the only. Pink Floyd weren't really any more technique orientated than any other group in the early 70s but they made some of the best prog by just thinking outside blues scales and 3minute popsongs

That's a good analogy of Genesis. Way, way overated for the very reasons you mention.

I'm reluctant to give a "worst" or "bad" rating to any band, almost all
I've heard have some good points, but of the "big" names I find it hard
to get enthusiastic about Dream Theater. This is entirely personal, I
recognise that they are good musicians, they have some decent tunes,
they do try to be ambitious in what they do, but they just don't float
my boat.

yeap, good point.
Phil, have you tried to listen carefully to 'Images and words' and 'Metropolis pt.2'?
I am just suggesting these two as their masterpieces. Of course 'Awake' is the next in line

I think this is a really bad thread, as I think that every band has
their good and bad points and to this kind of criticism isn't
particularly constructive and just puts people and bands down.

I've only heard a couple of cuts from it but from what I've heard, PFM's Come Ti Va in Riva Alla Citta is pretty bad and they've done some wonderful things....It's really not fair to use the "worst" label.
Just MHO....
