How about "epic/post metal"? A lot of those that don't relate to metal in the same way that post rock does to rock, do in the same way that post punk does to punk, or that post hardcore does to hardcore - Anathema and Kayo Dot in particular

OPETH - EXTREME PROG METAL ????
They are like Porcupine Tree on deadwing. Soft passages and then heavy passages, just a bit harder and with death metal growls. Listen to "Arriving Somewhere" but not here by Porcupine Tree, could be by Opeth (not the vocals) Edited by W.Chuck |

Opeth keep being moved between Extreme and Experimental/Avant-Prog. As soon as I put them ANYWHERE except Extreme, someone complains because of the vocals. Personally I would put them in the new Experimental/Avant category in Epic Prog Metal. They even have a "Post Metal" quality to them ... any thoughts? Edited by MikeEnRegalia |

Pelican is epic post metal in the vein of Neurosis and Isis. entirely instrumental stuff that's pretty sludgy, and I've heard it called "instrumental doom" and "trance metal". wouldn't necessarily classify as prog, though, but you should check them out. |

Where has Avantasia disappeared to? They're definitely progressive. I'd say power. They're at least far more into prog than Aina is and that band IS already in the Archives. Avantasia is a 2cd conceptalbum/band written, composed and arranged by power metal mastermind Tobias Sammet. It features a lot of timechanges, operatic and dramatic textures, 2 long epics and lots of mood changes, not the least to mention also the numerous different vocalists.
What you think? It's not even in the non-archives list of your table Mike... |

I certainly don't hear any prog in Pelican; they're decent though.

Oh and please keep Chroma Key out of the prog metal as a whole! The fact that the dude was in Dream Theater doesn't make it metal. I've never heard anyone (including myself) thinking it was metal. Most of it has more in common with triphop than with prog! (You go now). If it has to be labelled, it has got to be psychedelic/space rock! |

Oh, the subgenres make far more sense now by the way Mike . Opeth just fits in right with the Epic Metal part, that genre would define both their metal albums as well as their Damnation album . |

Thanks, king16! About Chroma Key: I also think that they should be moved to non metal - Space Rock seems the to be the best category for them. |

So, Mike considering you're on the Band Admissions team, could you maybe debate about it with your 'colleagues'? Surely this has more priority than a band that isn't in the archives yet (and makes it easier to not confuse the band with genres in the future )

I'll start a thread tomorrow with all the genre changes that I've determined during my examination of the metal genre.

Sorry, that one got lost when I removed the bands which are not yet in the archives from the genre lists. I added them to the left side column. I think that they should be included, too ... but like you said in your PM: First things first - The bands that are in the archives and THEN deal with new bands. |

Correct Mike! It was just that I noticed that it wasn't there anymore.
