^Kris: It's not really possible to be that specific with categorisations. Generally extreme vocals are only likely to occur in the red categories ... but they may be used occasionally by bands of the Power category, or even the Symphonic bands. BTW: Rhapsody only used operatic vocals on one song (Lamento Eroico on Power of the Dragonflame). But you're right in a way:

What "style" is that ... no categorisation? Maybe we should remove all of the categories and just call it Progressive Music ... |

Ok, there are two different points of view here:
Well, it's obvious that I choose the second theory. So if Prog Rock is divided into genres, why not divide Prog Metal as well? |

Thanks Ed! Think about your Virtuoso category though ... aren't there bands from all of your other genres which are virtuose? Of course one might say the same for experimental or extreme ... but virtuosity is particularly general. Shadow Gallery are VERY virtuose, but so are Cynic or Rhapsody. Apart from that your genres match mine ... |

By Virtuoso I mean bands that are really masterful with their instruments... And that should be their core element... DT have a complicated "w*nky" instrumental part in practically all their songs... And no comment on Spiral Architect... (they were quite a big inspiration for me with this genre) btw that virtuoso genre was a bit just 2 put band that are metal, but no extreme & don't have any classical elements in their music into one group... I still have a problem with Threshold though... Symphonic or Virtuoso... |

Dream Theater are not primarily a technical band. Of course they have lengthy instrumental parts with exceedingly complex music ... but it's always based on simple melodies. Key albums in that regard are Images & Words, Awake, ACOS and Falling into Infinity. These are prime examples of how I would define Neo Prog Metal. An album like Scenes From a Memory or 6DOIT disc 2 would also fit well in Symphonic though, and Train of Thought in Power. |

This is a good example of why the previously mentioned update to the archives is needed. I congratulate you Mike on all the work that you have done for this re-catagorization of Prog metal but if it is true that in a few months its all going on the scrap heep (well not all) then maybe it would be better to wait for then and avoifd doing the work twice. |

^ I don't think that album tagging will be implemented any time soon. Ask Tony or M@x ...

Mike, unfortunately choosing the second theory also means they do not belong here. You can't have and eat your cake. If prog metal is not a genré of prog rock, then the bands belonging to it do not belong here but on a prog metal site, since this is a prog rock site. |
