^Kris:

It's not really possible to be that specific with categorisations. Generally extreme vocals are only likely to occur in the red categories ... but they may be used occasionally by bands of the Power category, or even the Symphonic bands.

BTW: Rhapsody only used operatic vocals on one song (Lamento Eroico on Power of the Dragonflame).

But you're right in a way:

  • The blue categories (neo/symphonic) are the most accessible ones for people who don't like raw metal.
  • The green categories (orchestral/power) are more "raw", nonetheless they contain some pretty progressive bands. If you don't like neoclassical music or Power Metal (double bass riff oriented music), you might prefer the blue categories.
  • The red categories are for the more adventurous people ... if you like RIO/Avant-Prog, you should be able to enjoy many of these bands. The rightmost category is that which has the extreme metal bands ... I'm currently not sure, but I'll probably move the experimental bands to the Avant category, so only the really extreme bands like Cynic, Death, DEP etc. will remain.

Remember that even with 4 prog metal categories it's still 4 vs. 13 ...

What "style" is that ... no categorisation? Maybe we should remove all of the categories and just call it Progressive Music ...

Ok, there are two different points of view here:

  • Some say that Prog Metal is only a sub genre of Prog Rock, like Canterbury or Zeuhl. This would imply that all the bands in that genre are in some way similar.
  • Others say that Prog Metal is not really a genre, but a phrase similar to Prog Rock. But the bands described by that phrase are very diverse, similarly to the diversity of the Prog Rock bands.

Well, it's obvious that I choose the second theory. So if Prog Rock is divided into genres, why not divide Prog Metal as well?

Damn... I've thought this over a bit... I hope this will be more creative then my last...

  • Extreme - I hope You get the picture here... I want bands like Meshuggah, Cynic, Opeth etc here...
  • Virtuoso - band with lots of time changes, awesome musicianship, long instrumental parts, showing off etc... Dream Theater, Spiral Architect etc...
  • Orchestral - Band with classical elements... We already talked bout this... but the music should be dark, or at least not soft & "nice"...(hope You understand my limited English)
  • Symphonic - this may be strange, but I think that bands like Evergrey or Therion need 2 be separated form something like Shadow Gallery... This should have the more mellow, catchy "neo" feel that Mike talked bout...
  • Avant/experimental (I like 2 call it Experimetal) - all the wacky, strange stuff with the metal edge... Fantomas & co get here... no use splitting avant & experimental me thinks...

Damn... 5 of them... quite a lot... hope everyone understood me...

Thanks Ed!

Think about your Virtuoso category though ... aren't there bands from all of your other genres which are virtuose? Of course one might say the same for experimental or extreme ... but virtuosity is particularly general. Shadow Gallery are VERY virtuose, but so are Cynic or Rhapsody.

Apart from that your genres match mine ...

By Virtuoso I mean bands that are really masterful with their instruments... And that should be their core element... DT have a complicated "w*nky" instrumental part in practically all their songs... And no comment on Spiral Architect... (they were quite a big inspiration for me with this genre)

btw that virtuoso genre was a bit just 2 put band that are metal, but no extreme & don't have any classical elements in their music into one group... I still have a problem with Threshold though...  Symphonic or Virtuoso...

There's a relatively clear distinction between bands which use their technical playing as a central point (DT, WT, Spiral Architect, Behold... the Arctopus, Spastic Ink, Canvas Solaris etc.) and those who just happen to be able to play fast in their songs - Shadow Gallery, Zero Hour (not sure on these), Power of Omens. Maybe even DT would fit better in here, because despite long wankfests they do actually write songs too

Dream Theater are not primarily a technical band. Of course they have lengthy instrumental parts with exceedingly complex music ... but it's always based on simple melodies. Key albums in that regard are Images & Words, Awake, ACOS and Falling into Infinity. These are prime examples of how I would define Neo Prog Metal. An album like Scenes From a Memory or 6DOIT disc 2 would also fit well in Symphonic though, and Train of Thought in Power.

This is a good example of why the previously mentioned update to the archives is needed. I congratulate you Mike on all the work that you have done for this re-catagorization of Prog metal but if it is true that in a few months its all going on the scrap heep (well not all) then maybe it would be better to wait for then and avoifd doing the work twice.

Spending more than I should on Prog since 2005

^ I don't think that album tagging will be implemented any time soon. Ask Tony or M@x ...

Mike, unfortunately choosing the second theory also means they do not belong here. You can't have and eat your cake. If prog metal is not a genré of prog rock, then the bands belonging to it do not belong here but on a prog metal site, since this is a prog rock site.

BaldJean and I; I am the one in blue.
