For a punk kid, definitely Cardiacs! The energy of punk with
progressive and complex, but not too long songs. If someone hasn't
heard them, go to http://www.cardiacs.com/downloads/ immediately.
From there I'd go to Camel, Opeth and Gentle Giant just to show the
diversity of the genre. I believe Opeth could go down pretty well among
the youngest of listeners, because they are getting quite popular and
still deliver quality music... and have the metal thing, which is
always cool.

German krautrock band: Can is a very good starter also, weird lyrics (also about drugs in some places so maybe you should have a listen first).
Albums with Can worth trying with your kid:
1. Monster Movie
2. Tago Mago
3. Ege Bamyasi
And skip all their other albums, I love some of them but this ain't for me
Can is like a progressive punk band with psychedelic overtones... hard to describe right now because I've been awake "a couple of hours"
If he (I guess it's a boy, else pardon me) don't like "Monster Movie" skip this band or maybe let him find his own path... because if he don't like that album you could prolly have a good chance getting him into Progressive Metal (but that genre I can't help you with since I simply hate it!)

Yeah, I wish my collection were bigger at the moment. I'm chipping away at a rather major 'wish list'.
I'm mostly familiar with, and my taste runs to the symphonic and older electronic end of things, as well as some experimental and fusion. All of which would probably send this guy running for his the comfort of own CD's. That is why I'm here trying to pick your brains for ideas. I really do think that he would like this stuff, though, if presented right.
I'd like to put together a sampler. I know it took me quite a few listens to get the right ear for it. At first prog seemed overwhelming and busy. Now it can't have enough layers!
So if anybody has specific tracks they recommend that would be cool.

I'd go with The Mars Volta. It'd get him into lenghts aswell, and it's
very deep into the Trash side for progressive, hence punk, as it's trash. All
the noise found in these albums make an excellent transition from the
Puink scene to the progressive, and they have quite a bit of variation.
I agree to the point that lenght might be a bigger issue, however.
Perhaps he's into the punk scene for the Anarco-communistic text found
in those bands, at which point I'm rather clueless myself on what to
sugest. Perhaps some Floyd, The Wall, perhasp, as it deals with Social
issues like Education and parental controll in the track Mother. But
the sound isnt that much on the Punk side. Perhaps it's better to move
in from The Nile Song?
Dream Theater's Train of Tought is an excellent sugestion aswell, and I seccond it. It has some more trashy tracks.
Perhaps he's into the Ragea influences of The Clash aswell. Again, I'm lost on sugestions here.
It would be an idea to start on some of the more populair bands, tough,
to make it easyer for the kid to actually check them out. I mean it's
easyer to find things from these bands then the others, hence easyer to
talk about aswell. He dosnt have to be into modern things, as the Punk
style he listens to is basically rather anarchistic, hence opposed to
just following the moden style, but rather a more individualistic
figure, if you get me.
Mr. Bungle? It's farly weird, but it might be just what he's looking after.
But yea, The Mars Volta is basically my first sugestion, then Dream
Theater, then Pink Floyd after he has heard Images and Words. It's a
nice thing to start on perhaps Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence or Train
of Tought, then work one's way back in the Dream Theater Albums, as
they manage to expand the views of many who listen to them, or so I've
heard.
If perhaps The Mars Volta is a bit too weird, then perhaps it's good to
start with At The Drive-In, which should be able to make The Mars Volta
an easyer fruit to eat. Maby, that is.

Stage 1
actually i would at first try to get him into punk bands with a prog influence like some stuff by the Damned (Machine Gun Ettiquette)perhaps some Television (Marquee Moon) Pere Ubu (Dub Housing)Maybe it could scare him away he already likes the Dead Kennedys witch i think have a bit of a prog influence particualraly on the song Ill In The Head has some Zappa Influence others bands Bad Brains (I Against I) these guys are actually virtuosos who play Hardcore punk i would also suggest the album with Jello Biafra And Nomeansno this definetly has some Crimson influence the albums called (The Sky is falling and i want my mommy)
Stage 2
hopefully u can get your kid into those bands then i would move him into Primus (Sailing The Seas Of Cheese) then perhaps some Mars Volta i would let him listen to there first album first umm then perhaps Mr.Bungles Debut album also some early Metallica and some Opeth by now he might like some of the heavier Crimson stuff like Red and there modern stuff and he will probbably respect Zappa because of he kind of had a punky attitude particularly on his first few albums with the Mothers Of Invention and definetly give him some hawkwind (Do Re Me Fa So La Ti Do)or whatever its called
Stage 3
by now he should probbably open minded to stuff like Yes,Elp,Genesis and the Symphonic Rock and Fusion and what not still dont think he will be ready for any krautrock or Zuehl
Stage 4
give him Van Der Graff Generator,Can,Magma,Henry Cow,Universe Zero by now u should have carved your son into a prog freak
WELL THATS MY THEORY

This is a good one I think, especially the first record leans a lot toward ska-punk so maybe he'll like it.

Someone posted out here that he would introduce this 12 year all kid to Rush first. I agree with that, but I'd go more for the early Rush era or maybe with Chronicles. Other suggestions could be Dream Theater or most of the prog metal bands since the sound is heavier.
Personally, I believe is hard to introduce someone who's not old enough into prog music. Prog is so well structured and complex with so many time changes. Sometimes, I get people from all ages, and who are not into prog, giving me complaints about so many time changes in a song or the use of strange devices or sounds. I believe they prefer listening to the more traditional songs than those who develop more and more.
And why is it that you want to introduce him to prog???

I can see it in him, you know? This guys reading habits are way beyond his years (the kid's gone so far as to read the Silmarillion before 6th grade for instance), and he seems to have an adventurous attitude toward music. I guess I am remembering when I was young myself and didn't like the music on the radio. Wanted better lyrics and something more complicated that I could actually listen too. I don't think he is as much of a radical as his tastes suggest. His folks are a German and Russian who met in a punk club, but listen to U2.
I did get a chance to listen to a bit of the Cardiacs stuff. Sounds like a good direction. Feels very Punk with a bit of Progressive shining through now and then. I'll try to listen to more of the suggested bands over the weekend.
Thanks again.

You know, I started a thread where I was asking people's opinion about System Of A Down to be considered as prog related and I almost got my eye black ... hehehe!!!
The reason why I posted that thread was because I read about System of A Down to have incorporated prog related elements like bizare shifts in time signatures and tempo in their music, which I consider to be true at all... But people think that this will turn out to be more like a power/nu metal archives or a junkyard, instead of what it really is, which I don't agree at all.
They think that because of having this band in the archives, you'll have to introduce others such as Rammstein or Limp Bizkit, but I don't think they are in the same level as System Of A Down (They suck). I think SOAD's materials are artistically and musically pretty well done...
Not that I am a true fan of them, but I think they're great...
Probably someday we'll have them in... Who knows when... Maybe is way to far, but it'll come that day...

It's really impressive that some kids of that age have lots of habits beyond their age and it could be great that he can be introduced to prog music any time... I don't think he will regret this...
I think all of us have been introduced to this music stage by stage. I remember when I was first introduced to Rush, I prefered more their early ages and have a hard time with their 80's material (after Moving Pictures), because I was more into the hard/metal rock stuff, but now I love every single Rush album and I became impressive with their work that I collect every merchandise that comes out. With Rush I became more interested to listen to progressive stuff, including styles such as Canterbury Scene / Kraut Rock / RIO/Avant-prog, as part of the prog universe...
It is just amazing!!!

My 14 year old likes Tool, Porcupine Tree, Rush, Pink Floyd, Dream Theater when I have it on in the car. He finds Ozric Tentacles "too wierd". He mainly listens to Led Zep, Black Sabbath/Ozzie and Guns n Roses on his own.

Your best bet would be to start him off on bands like Kings X, Tool and The Mars Volta. The first two bands are closer than most prog groups to punk and Tool and TMV are modern chart bands. From there take him to the likes of Dream Theater, Spocks Beard and Marillion. If hes still interested introduce him to the older bands like Pink Floyd and Genesis and from there its up to him.
