Start with Red. If you like it then try In the Court of the Crimson King.

i first heard in the court of the crimson king, songs like 21st century, i talk to the wind or the court of the crimson king are one of my favourites songs. red is a good option too, but the two lasts songs are hard to digest, but anyway are incredible songs.

I recently bout ITCOTCK and I loved it from start to finish. Having read reviews about the similarities between this and their second Posiedon I have ordered that one. Also cause Greg Lake plays on it! |

As for an introduction to King Crimson, it begins and ends with In
the Court of the Crimson King. If you like that, Wake of Poseidon is pretty close to a facsimile of the first album, which isn't really a bad thing. Can't get enough of a 21 year old Greg Lake! Too bad he's relegated to the casino circuit these days. Red, in my opinion, might be the most overrated prog album ever (really hate John Wetton's voice). Larks' Tongues, though, is far superior. Discipline is also great if you're up for trying out funkier/dancier stuff. |

There are several phases of the band, which had different styles... These are rough linings: 1969-1972 they did symphonic prog. Two first albums have Greg Lake on vocals. Some like their 3rd album "Lizard" very much, it has Gordon Haskell on vocals, and a guest appearance by Jon Anderson. Next one is "Islands", which has Boz Burrel on vocals. 1972-1974 phase introduces Bill Bruford on drums, and the music is more avant-garde, with lots of improvisation, agressive tritonals and power chords. My favourite! After this the band broke up for a while, as Fripp got insane ( King Crimson was re-incarnated at early 80's with Adrian Belew on second guitar. The sounds are naturally very 80's like, and there's lot's of polyrhythms. They did three studio albums, and again disbanded. 3rd start happened at mid 90's. The music had some elements from their 80's material, and the band performed as a double trio (2 gtrs, 2 bass, 2 drums). When Bruford and Levin left, the music got more aggressive, and the latest albums appeal much to heavy metal fans. Hope this helped a bit... |

My first KC albums were Islands and LIzard, I was suggested to begin
like this and I have to say I 'm grateful to my "introducer". these two
albums are still my fav from the band and at the same time the only 5
star I' would rate in a review of KC discography

Thrak and Heavy ConstruKtion (3 CD live) are the most brilliant up to date
statements of the Crimsonian aesthetic. If you can spring for it, The Great Deceiver, a 4 CD Live Box of the '74 band is an absolutely essential item. |

red and thrak. or, to get a great OVERVIEW, try and
get hold of the "absent lovers" double live, directly from discipline global mobile records. |

I've always been a fan of the 80s era Crimson although this tends to be an
unusual choice. Obviously 'In The Court of' is a classic though. Cheers, Simon |
