Topic: An amazing contest. Posted: October 16 2005 at 14:22 |
Any prog guitarist vs. Van Halan would be halrious because VAn Halan would be eaten alive!

I can strangle a canary in a tin can and it would be really original, but that wouldn't save it from sounding like utter sh*t.

that would be interesting. Would go a long way to proving or debunking my theory that Emerson was the ' virtuoso mad-scientist' and Wakeman the 'soundscape painter'.

And it is of course a matter of liking the music they played drums to, and I definitely prefer Gong.

Certainly not; Moerlen also played vibraphone, xylophone and marimbaphone.

Imgine musicians live on the same stage chaleging each other in a contest of technique, mellody, and originality to the limits. Wouldn't that be a great thing to see? What would be the contest you'd like to see? For me a "batle" between Peart and Portnoy would be just perfect. There would be some amazing drumming from both sides and I think in the end the Professor would win... |
And then the ghost of the late Pierre Moerlen would descend from drummer's heaven and blow them both off the stage.
Or how about Christian Vander appear on stage, shouting "Da Zheul Wortz Mekanik", and the two running for cover?
|
You think so...? I think thr three of the would sound amazing. Still theprofessor would win Sorry
|
No-one ever came close to Pierre Moerlen. He didn't win the "Premier Prix de Percussion" of the university of Strassbourg for nothing. He's definitely the one who influenced my own drumming style the most. Always full of surprises. Too bad he died in May. It's not a matter of technique; there are a lot of drummers who are technically excellent; it is a matter of surprising ideas in play.

Itis subjective I guess. And titles mean much but not everything. I supose I could post Pearts awards but that wouldn't prove anything. It is a another matter if you like his playing or not. From my point of view I have never heard anything technicaly, musicaly, and even emotionaly better than O'Baterista on drums.

You seem to have forgotten John Bonham and Keith Moon - they're drummers and in comparison most of the others are bummers!
And - of course - Ginger Baker!!!!!
