Topic: Best female voice Posted: February 06 2004 at 18:25 |
There are very few women to sing in prog bands, and the ones I selected for this poll are probably the most representative.

NO, NO, NO, I cast my vote for Annie Haslam because she does truly have a wonderful voice but there are about thirty wonderful lady singers singing for what are generally termed Gothic-Metal or Symphonic-Metal bands which in reality are Sub Genres of Progressive Rock/Metal. Here's my top five:
Sharon den Adel - Within Temptation
Tarja Turgen - Nightwish
Medeah - Artrosis
Cristina Scabbia - Lacuna Coil
Vibeke Stene - Tristania

How about Sylvia Crichsen from White Willow, who's voice I find very evocative. Not to mention the occasionally awesome Lana Lane?
And even if you only give her prog cred for "Time Stand Still", you have got to love Aimee Mann.

I agree Semismart, gothic and heavy female singers are great, specially Tarja, what a voice! I add the Par Lindh's female singer, Magdalena Hagberg. Her voice is incredibly. Listen her singing in Bilbo or any Par Lindh's album, you'll believe there's an angel.

I feel like I can hardly vote since I'm such a Sandy Denny fan; i think she's just the best female vocalist ever, and a really good songqwriter as well.

What about Jennie Haan from Babe Ruth? She kicked some serious ass on that first album and at times she almost didn`t sound human! Presented with these choices though, I went with Joni. Renate Kanup kicked ass on early Amon Duul albums as well. I`ve tricked a lot of people into thinking that it`s Grace Slick singing on Archangel`s Thunderbird! I like Maggie Reilly a lot who sang on sevral Mike Oldfield albums. I particularily like her on Crises. What about Darga McBroom on Pulse By Pink Floyd? What amazing intonation! There are also a few good German bands that featured female vocalists back in the seventies. Although not a "prog vocalist" my favourite rock female voice would have to be Stevie Nicks with that killer vibrato. But the goddess of them all is Ella Fitzgerald without question or contest. Has anyone ever heard the killer version she does of Sunshine Of Your Love? If you haven`t it can be found on an album of the same name which was released in 1970 and still available.

I voted for Annie Haslam as 'the voice' but Kate Bush is a much more talented 'artist' who writes excellent songs and plays keyboards as well as singing. I'm also with Marcelo on Magdalena Hagberg of PLP ,she's great as well !

Speaking of females singing.....
Anyone else familiar with (Heart) Nancy Wilson's solo "unplugged" version of Pete Gabrial's "In Your Eyes"?
Outstanding, IMO.

I agree about Nancy Wilson. Great voice and I happen to know her. I did however vote for Annie, I saw Renaissance four or five times and she was wonderful.

Yeah I'll agree with that. I think she's still performing and recently released a new CD.

Voted for Kate Bush 'cause her voice is very strange and unique. Also she not just singer or songwriter as it often happens. She is a great composer and her 82 "The dreaming" - best prog album of ALL 80s.
I think we should not forget such ineresting female singers as Linda Hoyle from AFFINITY and Janita Haan from BABE RUTH. They desrve to be mentioned.

Kate Bush. I was lucky enough to see her in concert back in 1979. She was brilliant. I think she is currently working on a new album which I am looking forward to, though I think she has been working on it for quite a while apparently.
Also, look out for a Welsh group called Magenta. Their first cd, Revolutions is stunning in a prog sort of way with great vocals from the female lead, Christina. they have their second disc coming out at the end of March
Mostly Autumns Heather Findlay has a lovely ethereal voice and absolutly gorgeous with it. Her vocals within this group fit perfectly and can change from a gentle melody to full, in your face rock.

I saw Magenta at 'Progeny' last year.Very good they were.I'm still waiting to receive my copy of 'Revolutions' having ordered it some 3 months ago.Annoying!
I've got a sampler CD of Mostly Autumn which is very good. They are clearly influenced by Pink Floyd.
