Anybody can pick on the worst couple of tracks of a band (and indeed, you've succeeded!) in order to ridicule them, but in my person oppinion, 'Grand Illusion' and 'Pieces of Eight' were great albums, and 'Paradise Theater' was creative and grossly underrated as a concept. Anyway, I shall stand no Styx bashing in this forum!! |

Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

I agree Grand Illusion was quite good for an American Album and for an album of the late 70's. |

First time I have to disagree with you Mirco, you don't judge a band for their worst albums and songs if theyhave some that are great, so let me give you some examples: You can't disqualify Genesis because of Invisible Touch, Genesis will be remembered 30 years from know probably because of Foxtrot, Nursery Cryme and The Lamb, not because the pop albums that only Prog' fans remember (To criticize them), because mainstream listeners forget the band they worship after a few months of inactivity or if they cease to be cool. Would you evaluate ELP for Love Beach and In the Hot Seat when you have Trilogy and Brain Salad Surgery? Yes contribution to Progressive Rock and art can't be judged for Big Generator, because Close to the Edge and Relayer constitute icons of prog' rock. So it is absolutely unfair to judge more than a decade of Styx for Kilroy Was Here or Babe. As Fandango and NetsNJFan say, The Grand Illusion is a great album, not prog (except for Fooling Yourself) but still a release that had no fillers or bad tracks, maybe you don't like it but that doesn't mean it's bad. Why remember Cornerstone because of the only weak track like Babe, yes this song is crap, but Lights, with an incredible vocal work is an amazing song that deserve a place in Rock (I don't say Prog') pantheon. Please, try to be fair, Styx had very good albums like the already mentioned, Styx, Styx I, The Serpent is Raising or Cristal Ball, why always mention their worst mistakes? Iván |

Pete Hamill's voice is a disaster looking for somewhere to happen. I like most prog but VDGG do NOTHING for me. Nor generally do ELP for that matter even if 2 of them are virtuoso musicians (and I don't mean Greg Lake). Ironically Barclay James Harvest may not have been the most talented group of musicians but they made some fine albums because they wrote great songs and played to their strengths. Dream Theater should take note - they are much better musicians but their composition skills let them down. I'm pleased someone remembers the Portsmouth Symphonia - one of my best friends was a violinist (a very loose description) with them. 30 years on, he is still excruciatingly bad. The only thing they agreed on was which piece to play and when to start and finish - in between it was every man (and woman) for themselves!! Such incompetence borders on genius. Radiohead seem to be adopting the same philosophy. |

I am a big fan of Styx's early albums- 'The Grand Illusion' is one of my personal favourites, and find it pretty progressive with some great melodies and hooks. 'Suite Madame Blue' is a masterpiece of prog- a very dramatic and heavy piece with great use of harpsichord and moogs. Similarly, I love VDGG- they never did a bad album in their lifetime, and made some of the best, most challenging music out there. Personally speaking, I've never heard a band, from the 70s at any rate, that I found really, really bad. |

Some prog bands that I found boring: Cairo Mangala Valis UFO (their second album is prog but really boring IMO) Refugee (interestingly enough their only album is regarded as a classic, with a solid set of 5 star reviews in the archives) Almost anything by Rick Wakeman Almost anything by Clive Nolan/Oliver Wakeman

80's KING CRIMSON bores me to tears. I have a good laugh to myself when I see anything post-Discipline given 5 stars! FRANK ZAPPA-I wouldn't call him prog anyway but either way I detest anything he's done! |

I think it was Dennis De Young that said 'Babe' was their biggest career mistake because it aliented their fans & forced them to change direction due to record company pressure who wanted more hit singles! I don't see why people are knocking Zappa, he's not prog therefore he can't be one of the "worst" prog musicians. Pick on someone else. Has anyone mentioned the Yes-copy-cats "Starcastle" yet?

Ok, I'm sorry... I found two bands that are worse (in fact, I like Yes' Drama and Relayer a bit): PFM and Banco. Now, these 2 are the worse bands EVER. |

Almost anything with Clive Nolan in it, e.g. Shadowland, Casino, Arena as well as any band that tries to sound like Arena.

exactly........they are insanely talented.............much moreso than the group FANTOMAS and their noise posing as music I hate how if someone says they are 'avant-garde' ppl think they are intellectual and deep, when in reality they are making boring noise not music. Edited by NetsNJFan |
