Hey,
What if you can make a list of each band (included with the bio), simulair/influences/related etc..
For example:
Paatos - timeloss:
simularities(recommend if you like:): Opeth - damnation
Influences: björk, pro-seed, ägg
Related: Landberk, morte macabre
just to make an example..

You are suggesting the AllMusic.com format which I find very good. However, AllMusic is a commercial project while ProgArchive I assume is still not.

But it could help you find new interesting bands! Good idea, RT! But I have to say that IMO adding new bands is more important than this...

"SIMILAR BAND"is already an idea that we are thinking about ...
We want to find a solution that will not take us 3 months to complete because we have more than 1000 bands ...  We want to have time to continue to add new band also !
Do you guys have a rapid solution for this ?

Ask any reviewer to name a few similar bands in a special field, wich then automatically added to the Bio Page.

hmm just like you did with the bio's..
I can make a list of some simularities of some bands..
(I DON'T take the responce for bands like YES etc..  )
but bands like:
pinapple thief, porcupine tree, opeth, paatos, anekdoten etc.
I can fix those.. danbo could easaly fix alain holsworth (it is his duty)
so can everyone have his share i guess

And I think its also very interesting to have a active/unactive thing.. I didn't knew for instance that (please don't be hard on me) that Yes was active

This is a great idea. One of the ways I found this site was by a review saying "if you like Opeth...you'll like Porcupine Tree." Well who the heck is that. A little searching and wa-lah!!
The way I buy music is based on the things I like. Used to be I'd buy anything with a cool cover (that's how I ended up with 500+ cd's and an angry wife). 7 out of 10 times it turns out the cd is crap. So a good reference guide would be nice. And certainly, if you know enough about Marrilion or Camel or whoever, you probably know other similar artists.
It would probably save a few questions in the forum too. You know "I like these guys, can you suggest something".
And Radioactive Toy's suggestion...BRILLIANT!

My concern is that the idea that "if you like that band, then you will like this band" is ultimately subjective. I may believe that two bands are "related," while others would not. Or someone else night feel that two bands are "realted," while I may not.
I think we would be opening an ENORMOUS can of worms in trying to undertake this type of categorization.
What think ye?

I try to use the word "may" when offering a suggestion or "similar." Either way it's a SUGGESTION not really saying they sound alike or the same. In a way it leads people to further search the site to follow up on the suggestion.
If you like Momentary Lapse era Pink Floyd, you may want to check out RPWL or Timothy Pure.
Personally, I like to get some help on where to look. Diddy, Dick and Lucas have been very helpful in suggesting bands or albums that I MAY be interested in, based on the artists and tunes I've commented on.

I tend to agree, although it's certainly an idea with merit. However, I
would imagine you have enough trouble categorizing the bands into the
appropriate style categories... :-)

I tend to agree with maani's earlier post. Perhaps it's just enough for reviewers to mention who they think the band sounds like, and leave it at that.
