Hi everyone im a newbie to prog-rock i mostly listen to jambands (grateful dead, phish, new monsoon etc.) but recently i have become intrigued by prog-rock/metal i only have these prog albums:

Pink Floyd- the wall

Genesis- selling england by the pound

Yes- Fragile

Nightwish- oceanborn

and about 5 dream theatre albums

Other than those albums what would be some albums you would recomend for me to get to continue my introduction to prog rock

Peace

You might wanna try some Camel (Mirage, Moonmadness) or King Crimson (In the Court of the Crimson King).  Those are always good starting points.

Who the hell are Dream Theatre? Are they british?

Get Foxtrot and Nursery Cryme from Genesis

Close To The Edge, Relayer, Tales From Topographic Oceans, and the Yes Alfum from Yes

Dark Side Of The Moon, Animals, and Wish You Were Here from Pink Floyd

*dont know Nightwish*

Other bands you'll probably like

  • Rush (Moving Pictures, Hemispheres, Farewell To Kings)
  • The Mars Volta (Fraces The Mute, Deloused In The Comatorium)
  • Pain Of Salvation ( Perfect Element Pt. 1, Remedy lane)
  • ELP (Tarkus, Brain Salad Surgery)

That should be a good start

Ozric Tenticles is a band that sort of combines being a jam band with prog rock. I really like the CDs "Waterfall Cities" and "Erpland". (They are all instrumental)

If it's worth playing, it's worth playing loud!

Try...
for prog metal:

Porcupine Tree

Pain of Salvation

Opeth

Shadow Gallery

Sonata Arctica

Symphony X

rock:

Van der Graaf Generator

King Crimson

The Flower Kings

and you already some stuff by yes, floyd, and genesis. Like meurglys said, close to the edge by Yes is a must.
since you're just getting into it the metal is easier to get into. while VGG takes a couple listens.
Check this site out for some d/l's clicky, and I'm sure you know about this one too.

If you like jamming, try KING CRIMSON albums from their 1972-1974 timeline. Try "The Night Watch", a live concert from Amsterdam 1973.

There's lots of active prog metal bands, as you like DT, I suggest these:
- Pain of Salvation
- Ayreon
- Threshold
- Symphony X
- Shadow Gallery
- Spock's Beard
and my personal favourite: Lemur Voice: Insigths!
Currently listening to:
- Andromeda
- Pagan's Mind
- Kamelot

you should try frank zappa, i always found phish to be a mixture of greatful dead and frank zappa. joe's garage is nice and if you like jazz a little bit you should check out the grand wazoo!

maybe you could download the mp3 MOYA from godspeed you! black emperor from this site because gybe is a really great band (but that's just a personal favorite)
