The problem with most of the kids, threefates, is that they come into music through 50 Cent and Shakira.

This 25-year old kid came into prog, jazz and avantgarde through DT. I also arrived at Porcupine's Tree music through DT.

And Steven Wilson? What does he know about good music

Steve Wilson is actually brilliant.  I had the chance to have a bit of conversation with him.. and he reminded me a little of Keith Emerson. 

And I don't think any of these kids would have been listening to 50c or Shikira... their pants weren't falling off ...

Tell you the truth, it always amazes me when a bunch of 16 year olds tell me they just love Pink Floyd.  Its just uncanny how Floyd has been the one band that transcends the generations.  One girl had on a Division Bell shirt I'd never seen... She's gonna send me one.  And yesterday on here in the Show Reviews section when I left a review of the PT show... one of the cutie 16 year olds that was with us, left me a message here...and I didn't even tell her about this place... so I'm very happy about it!!

The sample reviews posted at the beginning of this thread are what I would consider "fanboy" - absolutely no substance, just blathering on about how great it is.

That's what I'm getting at - simply that DT seem to attract more of this type of review than others, and this is bad publicity - especially when old proggers/metalheads like me buy the album and feel a bit conned.

I'd like to see more objective reviews, with consideration to the weaknesses - there are weaknesses in DT's music, you know

Many DT fans are just young and, with the young, there is only black and white (no shades of grey) and they are never wrong. Just ask anyone with a teenage son.

Dream Theatre (sorry, that's how it's spelt in English) are obviously good musicians (except the vocalist who is frankly awful) but their composition is very moderate and much of their material lacks coherence and clear structure. Not unpleasant but too self indulgent and not the greatest prog ever IMO. But let's not forget that some great and highly talented bands (Yes for example) lost the plot and became overindulgent in the 80s. To suggest that DT's output is better than some of the 70s prog like Yes, Camel and Genesis or 80s material like Marillion is, in my view, not tenable. But DT fans are entitled to their opinion. And that's what it comes down to, so why not respect other people's opinions and stop sl*gging people off just because they don't agree with you?

And do you know that Mike Portnoy actually likes rap. That was the reason for some parts in As I Am, This Dying Soul and honor thy father muhahahha! That's right

So if a Dream Theater fan doesn't say "Dream Theater is my favourite band but I'll admit they're not perfect" then they're ignorant?
