Fraid so. I know each and every song, and for a reason I can't explain (and shouldn't have to anyway) I love them all.

God you all need to stop whining about such stupid
things. Someone ranks a DT album 5 stars and a Yes album 1 star and
you're all moaning about how he's an ignorant DT fanboy who "doesn't
know what music is". This guy is entitled to his opinion, and is
entitled to write a review. I personally would rate every DT 5 stars
because they I honestly, truely love them. I also listen to bands like
Yes, Rush, Marillion and Mike Oldfield, but in my eyes they're nothing
compared to Dream Theater.
Get over it.

:raises hand: In front of me, there is possibly 10 Progressive albums and I've got 100s more !!!!! I have listened to Yes, Rush, ELP, Genesis and IAW still owns all of them, yes even Close to the Edge.
And do you know that Mike Portnoy actually likes rap. That was the reason for some parts in As I Am, This Dying Soul and honor thy father muhahahha! That's right

Dream Theatre (sorry, that's how it's spelt in English) are obviously good musicians (except the vocalist who is frankly awful) but their composition is very moderate and much of their material lacks coherence and clear structure. Not unpleasant but too self indulgent and not the greatest prog ever IMO. But let's not forget that some great and highly talented bands (Yes for example) lost the plot and became overindulgent in the 80s. To suggest that DT's output is better than some of the 70s prog like Yes, Camel and Genesis or 80s material like Marillion is, in my view, not tenable. But DT fans are entitled to their opinion. And that's what it comes down to, so why not respect other people's opinions and stop sl*gging people off just because they don't agree with you?

Ya, there's lots of teenagers loving PF around here. Just yesterday

whole DSOTM live and the Wall
Unfortunately only few of them are willing to get further into prog ....

At the end of the day, it's easy enough to tell the difference between a carefully considered review with at least an attempt at objectivity and a simple "fanboy" review. If lots of people want to rate an album with 5 stars, that is simply an indication of its popularity - not the quality.
The quality of the reviews give a much better indication of the quality of the music, so I think this type of review is actually quite helpful.
|
I understand that, but at the same time it confuses me. I could go right now if I wanted to and write a review of every Dream Theater album. I could analyse every song and why I like it, and each album would get five stars.
Once that's done, my review will only receive all these comments about how it's from a typical "Fanboy who hasn't considered his review".
Ya'mean?
|
The sample reviews posted at the beginning of this thread are what I would consider "fanboy" - absolutely no substance, just blathering on about how great it is.
That's what I'm getting at - simply that DT seem to attract more of this type of review than others, and this is bad publicity - especially when old proggers/metalheads like me buy the album and feel a bit conned.
I'd like to see more objective reviews, with consideration to the weaknesses - there are weaknesses in DT's music, you know

Doubt that seriously... you can't even clean up behind yourself!
And most of the kids at the Porcupine Tree concert last night... said they came into prog thru Pink Floyd, not Dream Theater... most didn't even like Dream Theater and were surprised that they like the Rudess Morgenstein project so much as a warm up band.
Dream Theater is not prog. Its not even metal... its just somewhere...
Or as Steve Wilson would say... "Arriving Somewhere.. but not here"
|
The problem with most of the kids, threefates, is that they come into music through 50 Cent and Shakira.
This 25-year old kid came into prog, jazz and avantgarde through DT. I also arrived at Porcupine's Tree music through DT.
And Steven Wilson? What does he know about good music

At Least ELP fanatics admit ELP wasn't perfect perfect. It woudl be nice if DT fans would do the same for DT.
|
But you gotta admit that Jordan Rudess is perfectly perfectly bald.
BTW, what is that BELVA crap still doing up there?
EDIT: Okay, it's gone now.
|
I never said Dream Theater was perfect perfect, not even IMO the greatest album ever produced, IMAGES AND WORDS!
|
Right you are. I&W has "Another Day".
Although if LaBrie simply showed more restraint in his singing and the lyrics were something like 236323286238 % better, it would be a very good song.

DT IS NOWHERE NEAR PERFECT.
No one is. Yes isn't perfect, Krimson isn't. The closest to perfection
I've seen is Porcupine Tree, and even they have a couple duds.
