I love this epic ... some others don't. I honestly don't know why some of you don't like it ... what is good/bad about it, which other similar epics would you prefer?

I think it's one of the best heavy metal songs ever written.

I think it is excellent, and it has always had a bit of a Close To The Edge vibe to it for me, especially Mike's drumming, which seems more Bruford-inspired on this song, whereas he usually sounds very Peart-inspired to me. Great 7-string acoustic intro too!

I agree. IMO, the question of originality aside, it's even slightly better than CTTE, as the particular sections flow into one another more logically.

its really good, i espeically love the live scenes from new york version where mike portnoy goes off stage and comes back in a bathrobe and they randomly play the theme from the simpsons in the middle of it!

To conclude their 3 hour set, James Labrie announces to the audience "sorry for the short set list!"

Dream Theater are brilliant, more brilliant than you

Brialliant song.  However if you manage to hear the version which is found in Live Scenes From New York, it is a hell of a lot better.  Very cool improvisation bit in the middle section as well.

I admit, the joining of CTTE's four movement's is at times irrational, but it is still the supreme Prog Epic

I was going to reply with all the reasons why, but then decided to hold my peace about why I don't like this song.  It would only make you mad and start a "Yes it is" "No it isn't" war that won't accomplish anything.  Let's just leave it that I don't even think it's good music let alone good prog.

Hahah, I have those CDs too, I love all of it. It was a GREAT concert, especially some of the different stuff they throw in. The order of songs is great too.

I have listened to it maybe three times on the 'live scenes' CD but it didn't  do anything for me i'm afraid. Maybe its one of those songs that will eventually grow on you in time if you play it often enough. I'll give it another blast tomorrow!

It is not my favorite Dream Theater song, but its definitely in my top 5 with Learning to Live, Trial of Tears, Space-Dye Vest and Metropolis, I just love that song, its so amazing.

And no the ultimate Progressive Metal epic would not be this song, but rather Learning to Live :)

I actually like this song, even though I've never really liked any of the other Dream Theater I've heard.

Obviously you don't like the song, that's fine with me. But what objective reasons are there that lead you to the statement that it's "bad" music or even not prog at all? I'm a musician, and I'm curious to see if there are specific elements of this song that drive people off, is it the singing, the heavy parts, ...

Ah yes, the old "I wasn't going to reply with my objective opinions not to start an unnecessary argument so I replied I wasn't going to reply with my objective opinions not to start an unnecessary argument - (although I'm really making this reply just to have the last word and, with luck, to start an unnecessary argument and not be held responsible for starting it just because I had told everyone I wanted to avoid it in the first place)- argument"

OK, JMCecil let's hear 'em if you want them out so badly.

Why then should it be considered the sureme Prog Epic? Shouldn't the supreme prog epic be inspired, inspiring, innovative AND cohesive?

EDIT: I don't want to start an argument over CTTE here, I simply detect double standards at play.

Paranoid is a great heavy metal song. ACOS is not like Paranoid. ACOS is much more complex, with odd time signatures, different sections, keyboard layers, ... it is as prog as prog can be. What you fail to see (IMHO of course) is that there are various forms of prog. The most fitting of which seems to be prog metal in this case. If ACOS is not prog metal, what is?
