They are all fine albums, but for me, the peak period of the Ozric Tentacles was the late nineties, in which they released Curious Corn, Waterfall Cities, and Hidden Step. The music on these albums is so sonically powerful, it blows your mind. And so full of beauty too. A truly magical band. I recently heard that the flutist, Jumping Jon, has been kicked out and that the band is in danger of folding altogether. I hope that's not the case. That would be very sad. |

When if comes to Ozric Tentacles, I think you just really need to buy one album. Once you've got one, you've got them all.

I couldn't disagree more. Each of their albums has their own charm and character. To my mind, they have created their own unique genre of music and each album is a different and interesting exploration of it. I'm very glad they have taken the effort to do this. Dismissing the whole of the Ozric's catalogue simply because they always played trippy space music is like dismissing John Coltrane's work because all he ever did was play jazz. |

I would say that about Sphongle way before I would say that about Ozric Tentacles. I'm not dismissing everything the Ozric's have done becuase it's trippy space music either, I use to own 7 of their albums and I've heard about 3 others, I'm dismissing what the Ozric's for never having much variety. After 21 years of music making, I would have thought they would have done more than just added in a few techno beats. I don't think that your comparison really works either. Coltrane was a great jazz musician, he experimented with music and made something out of it. I have nothing against spacey music, but I the Ozric's could have raised the bar, and they totally didn't. But they seem happy with making the same album over and over again, so if they're happy with what they're doing, kuddos to them. Edited by Spanky |

I'm pretty sure new OT is very different to old OT. I may be wrong though.

I have Erpland and the double disc with Erpsongs and Tantric Obstacles. Great driving music! Although I can appreciate the comments about lack of variety. The style is pretty consistent from one album to the next in my opinion, but still enjoyable. I still find it amazing that so many people here in the states have never heard of them.

I have all of Ozric's albums and they are all great so I would say to you to buy any of them and you won't be disappointed. They never made a bad album. I would recommend to you though to try some of their live stuff. They're a great live band. I like Live Underslunky but also the Pongmaster's Ball is great and probably easier to find. There are other bands' albums you might also be interested in too based on the following thread: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=8370

Ozrics are a marvellous band - their music is brilliant as background
music but also is HUGELY rewarding if listened to closely. Quirky yet
accessible, appealing to both mind and body... can one ask for more in
music? It may be true that their style is very consistent and one may
not NEED more than one album, but if you really like their sound you'll
want a handful or you'll get tired of hearing exactly the same tunes
and yearn for a little variation. My faves:

My favorites are Strangeitude, Jurassic Shift, Erpland, and Pungent Effulgent The stuff after that is too heavy on the keyboards for me. If you like "Kickmuck" off of Pungent Effulgent, you should get "You" by Gong for the song "Master Builder".

I've got a rare live recording of OT covering Master Builder. It's
the most explicit reference to their roots and influences I've found. |
