recording: mic or in-line ?

i can't see any
significant advantage to using a microphone on an instrument if that
instrument can be plugged directly into the recording device.

i've always gone in-line for recording.

with a mic, you've got the possibility of picking up ambient noise, etc.

	There's some debate about this- now that amp/speaker modelling is so advanced, you can get a great electric guitar sound directly....but there a lot of people who maintain that it's still no substitute for a 'real' speaker sound. If possible, I like to go for a mix of the two...but I have no complaints about the sound of my POD. Plus, I'm too cheap to buy all those amps anyway. I'm more in favor of using mics on acoustic instruments; I'd rather hear an acoustic guitar recorded with a mic than one of those horrible electric-acoustics. I can understand using them on stage, when there's feedback concerns, but I never liked that bitter piezo sound.

	good considerations JL. don't you think however, that the quality of on-board equipment / mics has come a long way since they first began to develop electric-acoustic guitars ?

	Oh yeah- modern electronics are a million times better than the goofy pickup & EQ that I had in my Ovation back in '87. I could get a better acoustic sound from a Parker solidbody now. Still, there's all sorts of neat acoustic resonances that pickups fail to...uh...pick up. Same goes for drums- there's such a huge difference between putting a mic on an isolated piece of a kit and getting the sound of all the drums ringing against each other.
