Topic: Metropolis pt.2 lyrics Posted: May 06 2005 at 12:10 |
Why so many people says that DT lyrics are bad, i think in metropolis pt.2 they did a great job. Yes, the lyrics are simple but so good for the theatrical concept story...

why? ' 'carry me to the shoreline, bury me in the sand, walk me acrossed the water... 'once the stone you're crawling under is lifted off your shoulder'.......nuff said. Anyone who puts that on a record on purpose should be shot on site.
Don't make me whip out Take Away My Pain lyrics. Those are cruel and unusual punishment.

I like lots of songs where the lyrics could be written by a 3rd grader. The question was, "why do people hate on DT lyrics"

Sorry, the question was broader than that. He said he thought the lyrics in pt. 2 were pretty good. Then went on to ask why people made fun of their lyrics. I actually think the pt 2 lyrics are bretty bargain bin myself but I think DT lyrics ruin 99% of their music.
When I first heard Images and Words when it came out I almost fell off the sofa laughing. Fortunately there are enough great musical moments that you can block out the high school prose contest. I can't say the same for most of what followed.

Bad poetic license, I was busy looking in the book of rhymes for something that worked with sofa.

And, I'm not that hard to please really. But if someone asks a question that suggests that anyone who answer is going to give a negative reply, that's what they should expect. I think DT has some great musical ideas, but the lyrics are cheezy as all get out. The amount of cliche in them is unbelievable.

Exactly, except on some songs on ToT, maybe Portnoy could swear a bit less.

ok im giong to have to back up JMCecil,...Dream Theater lyrics,
although arent that bad(ok mabey they are,) contain no meaning, its
spelled out 1..2..3 no thouhgt involved, in my opinion to be great
lyrically they words have to provok thought, carry meaning - in that
sense DT lyrics are not very good

Okay. Well I have to agree with you: some of DT lyrics are horrendous.
But they're not the only one; just look at Yes - most of the time their lyrics make no sense.

Hey I don't disagree with that at all. Especially the later Yes. In fact its almost the same random sampling of blah blah blah. The earlier Yes, although occassionaly goofey, was based on spiritualism and had roots in the chanting and rhythms of other cultures. There are no roots for the fluff that DT writes.
I'm not defending other bands bad lyrics at all. I was just answering the question. It wasn't meant to insult DT fans.

Nicholas: Where did we come from? Why are we here? Where do we go when we die? What lies beyond And what lay before? Is anything certain in life?
They say, "Life is too short," "The here and the now" And "You're only given one shot" But could there be more, Have I lived before, Or could this be all that we've got?
If I die tomorrow I'd be allright Because I believe That after we're gone The spirit carries on
I used to be frightened of dying I used to think death was the end But that was before I'm not scared anymore I know that my soul will transcend
I may never find all the answers I may never understand why I may never prove What I know to be true But I know that I still have to try
If I die tomorrow I'd be allright Because I believe That after we're gone The spirit carries on
Victoria: "Move on, be brave Don't weep at my grave Because I am no longer here But please never let Your memory of me disappear"
Nicholas: Safe in the light that surrounds me Free of the fear and the pain My questioning mind Has helped me to find The meaning in my life again Victoria's real I finally feel At peace with the girl in my dreams And now that I'm here It's perfectly clear I found out what all of this means
If I die tomorrow I'd be allright Because I believe That after we're gone The spirit carries on
WTF? No meaning? These are some of my favourite lyrics. This is some powerful stuff. Once again this all comes down to "It's Dream Theater... so it's crap".
