Topic: Modest Mouse Prog? Posted: August 02 2005 at 02:36 |
Hey, i have been a modest mouse fan for a while and i always felt like they could be somekind of prog rock band. Would any one like to tell me there oppinion.
if u have not listened to them i recommend you listen to the album The Moon & The Antarctic. This album is alot less pop sounding than Good News For People Who Love Bad News. If u disagree or have any oppinion like to share please do, because this has been itching me for about a year.

Oh f**k no.
They're a decent indie-pop band. Did some nice things in the
past. But their latest album should be an indication that they're
only losing anything even remotely progressive.

First The Arcade Fire, then Neutral Milk Hotel, now this?
No, Modest Mouse are not prog. They're a remotely decent indie band, but they have nothing to do with progressive rock.

but i thought modest mouse fit in with several of the defining parts of progressive rock
1. "Lyrics that convey intricate and sometimes impenetrable narratives"
2. "Concept albums, in which a theme or storyline is explored throughout an entire album"
3. "Unusual vocal styles and use of multi-part vocal harmonies"
4. "Prominent use of electronic instrumentation"
But i am basing all of this on their earlier work i know their newer stuff is complete and utter pop.

the flaming lips fit that 4 point criteria you've set out as well though.

This is a fairly old criteria, from the days when electronic instrumentation was considered innovative. for the music of the last 25 years, electronic instrumentation is commonplace.

OK, I see but could anyone explain prog rock a little better than what the website said, because every time i ask whether something is prog or not i get scolded. Is there a certain amount of criteria they must meet or is there one prominant feature that would define it?

the flaming lips are far closer to prog than modest mouse. i truly believe they are classified as "symphonic pop with prog tendacies." just look at "zaireeka" and "yoshimi battles the pink robots"
but anyway, modest mouse is so not prog it isn't even funny. soon we will be considering any band that has a song in 3/4 time.

use common sense people. if the chemical brothers had a songor two in 3/4 time using keyboards and strange vocal melodies, one just does not classify them as prog. why? because they're THE CHEMICAL BROTHERS!!!! if we follow on this line, many "electronica and trance" artists, not to mention other enven less prog artists, may be added.
