Topic: Opeth - Ghost Reveries Posted: July 28 2005 at 03:29 |
I think the new album sounds great!
Got the entire album yesterday, and it sounds promising after my first listen.
They're experimenting with some new vocal sounds, which is good.
Have anyone else heard it? What do you think?

I think it's a typical 4 star-album. Has more progressive elements, but
the lack of real improvment is regrettable. The harsh, heavy parts have
already appear on their previous albums. Good point is that every song
contain something remarkable, a mixture of a heavier Damnation, Still
Life and the B-side of Blackwater Park. Outstandig tracks: the opener,
which is one of the best Opeth song, followed by 2, 4 and 6.
I think the older progheads will like it. Kind of a missing link between prog metal and the 70es.
PS: Support the band and buy the official release!! I'll do the same.

i haven't heard it enough yet to agree or disagree with what you say above. but it probably makes sense.
a 4 is not bad, after progarchives standards

Not bad at all! "Excellent addition to your prog collection", that's it. Not a masterpiece, but a very good prog album.

Yes a solid 4. Excellent heavy parts as well as acoustic parts
and some great organ/piano parts which have been unheard by me on
previous Opeth albums, I could be wrong though I'm not the biggest
Opeth fan. As for the comment on the lack of improvement, I find
this album more interesting than Blackwater Park especially the piece
'Atonement' with great vocals and an eastern vibe. The vocal
effects on that track are great and fit will with the mood of the
song. Good to see them getting away from the growling because
he's actually a very good singer. and that's my two cents

if he ever stops growling i'm going to be very very sad.
the growling is just as beautiful as the clean parts. unlike many other death metal bands, you can actually hear what he is singing.
mikael, keep it up!

It is good... Per is so good with the keyboards.. The songs are progressive, but it doesn't feel forced, but rather logical progression of the song, even if in different directions.

I have it and think it probably one of their best albums to date,as good as Blackwater Park.

Yeah, I also think it's their best. There are less harsh vox parts at the least.
I have their whole discography but I only liked like 5 songs.

I like it, but it kind of feels like more of the same. It still needs more listens though, so don't quote me on this one.

Yeah, this is their first album with keyboardist Per Wilberg. I've only
heard Ghost of Perdition and The Grand Conjuration, but I really like
the atmosphere they keyboards and mellotrons add to the songs.
