Topic: Most Unique Frontmen Posted: April 09 2005 at 14:23 |
Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull fanatics are a scary breed)
Jon Anderson (Master of the lyrical anomalies)
Syd Barrett (No explanation required)
Robert Fripp (Mr. Cold Eyes)
Peter Gabriel (I know someone who has been arrested for singing 'Family Snapshot' in public)
Thom Yorke (Sometimes I think he wishes he were in the same category as poor Syd)
Frank Zappa (I was actually considering putting him in the poll on the sole basis that I have NEVER seen a picture of him without that infamous facial hair... but we all know there's more to him than that)

Definitely Gabriel. I mean he wore a dress and the head of a fox... that's gotta be unique.

I saw Gabriel back in 1984 at a Montreal concert, when he still was using make up in his presentations. He was (and still is) magical on stage, the way he uses body expression to conmunicate with the audience is unique and people answered pretty well to that.
As a reference I have an anecdote about that concert I'd like to share. The san Jacinto rythm section was going on as he started singing the part where he says "I Hold the Line" he stood up over a bean of light and as he neeled down he was capturing the light in his right hand. Slowly standing up with the light in his hand he gracefully changed the direction of the light bean up to the sky (as if the light was coming from his hand). Beautiful effect, along with the music of course, at the end as we came out of our hypnotic stage, we figuered he had a little round mirror stuck to the palm of his hand.
I rest my case!!!!

Ian Anderson. I've never seen him live
but I have seen many concert videos etc. from the 70's and he was
always totally crazy. And he didn't do any drugs.. (or at least that's
what he says). Frank Zappa was another total maniac. Fripp of course,
too, and Gabriel! but anyway..my vote goes for Anderson.

Way back in the early 70's, around the time of "Foxtrot", I saw Genesis live. Gabriel have real aura to him, a mystique which made him a real enigma.
His wide shaved parting which was luminous on stage enhanced that perception. The rest of the band seemd very serious about the music (not that Gabriel wasn't). The stage was always clear of clutter, with just one amp box, which emphasised even more that Gabriel was the centre of attention.

one time, Zappa was playing a show with Alice Cooper, and they challenged each other to see who could do the weirdest thing. alice cooper took a crap on the stage. when zappa came on, he put cooper's crap on a plate, and ate it.

Very famous story. Very untrue, but very famous. Now here's a true story.
Ozzy and some other dude are daring eachother to do the grossest thing possible. Ozzy gets on his knees and snorts living ants off the sidewalk. The other dude urinates onto the ground and gets ready to lick at it. Before that can happen though, Ozzy pushes him out of the way and starts lapping at it!! True story. Won't see that on The Osbournes.

Gabriel set the standard... Freddie Mercury was a pretty good front man too.

I love that picture.
I got Genesis Live on vinyl today too, as a side. Everything on that
album is so down tempo! Its good, but much slower than the originals.

I voted for Ian Anderson, but Peter Gabriel is certainly pretty unique...
But Thom Yorke?! Umm ok!

Robert Fripp is not KC's "frontman." Hell, he even sat in the rear during the double-trio days!! KC's "frontmen" have been Greg Lake, John Wetton, and Adrian Belew. If I forgot somebody, so what. Those are the only guys that matter.
Out of that list, Ian Anderson, because he made the image of a "rocking bard" cool in the public eye. And he sang circles around Gabriel.
