How can't you love an album with classics like 'Ella Guru', 'The Blimp', 'Ant Man Bee', and 'Dachua Blues'? Really one of the few i'd bring on the proverbial desert island.

I've heard only five Beefheart albumz. They all are different but at rha same time intersting. Most of all I likes "Safe as milk". His voice is very unique and he might be mentioned on this site. He recorded less albums than Zappa but its quality isn't worse

I don't think you can really compare Beefheart to Zappa. Their music is GREAT and artistic, but different. My first Beefheart album was 'Bluejeans and Moonbeams'. I thought it was nice, but (as many fans say) it's nothing compared to 'Trout Mask Replica'. 'Bluejeans and Moonbeams' is in fact a quite 'normal' bluesrock record. Zappa has never made such a 'normal' album. Neither did he make such a difficult and hard to listen to album as Trout Mask. Zappa did so many things, so many different styles and, as far as I know, Beefheart does weird stuff, but it always sounds like he's singing the blues...very roughly. That's why I prefer Zappa

I don't agree that Zappa never did a "normal" album. What about "Overnite sensation"? Isn't it just a blues-rock record? My favourie "Apostrophe" - what strange their?
And I prefer Beefheart 'cause his voice not only bluesy, it has some incrdible feelings. Nothing compare to Zappa

I think quite a bit of Zappa's stuff is fairly straightforward, but just put through a Zappa filterof some sort. He produced Trout Mask (everyone probably knows that, just thought I'd mention...).

Yes, I know he produced Trout Mask.
I still think 'Overnite Sensation' and 'Apostrophe' (especially the first four songs together, about Nanook) are more complicated and more progressive than 'Bluejeans And Moonbeams'. Do you guys actually know that album?
But, of course, there are some similarities between their music, they were friends and even recorded an album together...

I heard "Bluejeans..." and I agree that it is just blues-rock ecord. But I mean that albums (both Zappa and Beefheart) proved their power in all styles. I mean they in easy way played such a kind of music, not to make money. Just for fun. And what about "Sniny beast"? Did Zappa record any album similar to this chef d'oeuvres

I'm sorry, don't own that one... I'm only listening to prog stuff for about half a year now...
I have: Trout Mask Replica, Doc At The Radio Station and Bluejeans and Moonbeams
and about 15 Zappa albums (including all the Mothers' greatest)

You need to hear 'Bongo Fury' - a live album with Beefheart & Zappa's band; more of a bluesy/roughneck album than you'd expect from Zappa, but an absolute stormer nonetheless

I know Muffin Man from that record and I own the entire album in mp3 (a gift form someone). But I never listened to it. I want all Zappa CD's original, not downloaded

Beefheart is a true original, there was NOBODY like him before or since! If I had to describe his music, I would say Stravinsky, Ornette Coleman and a bunch of great blues musicians having an acid freakout together.
Trout Mask, Lick MY DDecals and Doc At The Radar Station are my personal favorites.
