Arsillus said it best above.
Peart is among the gods, Portnoy is a god in waiting.
Peart is the reason I love prog music - no one will ever convince me otherwise that he is the greatest of this generation.

The more that things change, the more they stay the same.
If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

I vote for peart probably one of the greatest worldwide, definetly my favourite and after all a magnificent personality.
Portnoy is one of the best new drummers without doubt but not that great yet.
enjoy

My favorite is probably Bill Cobham, but out of these two, Peart without hesitation. Portnoy isn't original enough, his beat although very fast, are always kind of boring.

Pert as in Neil Peart? Rush's Neil Peart?? How exactly do these two
compare? They have nothing in common.. Neil Peart has an excellent ear
for music and can play his arse off without you even noticing.. nothing
of a show off, very nice beat.
Mike Portnoy has a .. "bag of tricks". That's it... a "Bag of Tricks"
taken from Stone's stick control and another couple of books, turned
into repeating patterns.
I choose the drummer over the bag of tricks.
