Personally, I don't enjoy 80's KC very much...
Music has always been a matter of energy to me. On some nights I believe that a car with the needle on empty can run 50 more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio. Hunter S Thompson

Nine years later, I should admit that I never genuinely cared for any of the later albums. It was just some music I checked out and thought "this is ok", but I never return to any of them. When I saw them live, I caught myself thinking every detour away from their seven (or eight, but they didn't play anything from Discipline) first albums a waste of time. Not something I'm proud of, but compared to what I didn't get to hear - I can understand myself.

The thread had activity in many years really. Arguably it was never dead and in need of revival.

It looks like no one includes "Earthbound" any more. Back in the day, that was always included as an official album - between Islands and Lark's Tongues - even despite the bootleg quality. Fripp recognized it, etc. I remember having a hard time locating it, though eventually got it on vinyl. Too bad it didn't sound better.

I've been listening to them since 1983, and my favorites have changed over time.

Currently, the favorites are: In the Court, In the Wake, Lizard, and Red.

I don't like Discipline.

For some odd reason I only ever managed to get into ITCOTC and ITWOP - i.e when Greg Lake was on bass and vocal duties.

I enjoy prog but, to be quite honest, I've fallen out of love with the type of bombast you might get out of symphonic prog records that you'd find on the Greg Lake era. I think a lot of ITCOTCK is a bit dated. Influential, important and essential yes. But just for me I find it in 2019 to be a bit... well... silly.

I enjoy prog with more modernity (it is in the genre's name after all) and a more current political and social consciousness as well as a more pop and rhythm based aesthetic.

I'm not a big fan of Greg Lake, and I don't like ELP very much.  I would agree that ELP can be bombastic at times.

I don't think I would describe ITCOTCK as "bombastic" though.  A bit dated in parts, yes, possibly, which is partly why I don't rate it as the best KC album or the best ever prog rock album (as some do), although it's importance in the history of prog rock cannot be denied.

What I don't accept though, is the idea that modern prog rock should be rated more highly than classic prog rock, simply on account of it being newer.

My understanding of the term "progressive" rock is that it was called "progressive" because the songs progressed from one point to another, rather like a symphony, as opposed to constantly repeating themselves, as in the standard verse/chorus pop song.

in other words "progressive" doesn't imply some imperative to constantly "progress" into the future and reinvent the music, rather it simply describes the structural form of progressive rock music.

Anyway, keep enjoying the music.

stumbled across this post. It's interesting because Keith Emerson also used that description for progressive rock. Most would assume it's the 'progress into the future' definition and I see that as now accepted as the definition.

For my rankings
Red and ITCOTKC are the only two I rate at 10/10
Lizard 9/10
Starless and Bible Black 8/10
The Power To Believe 7/10
ITWOP and LTIA 6/10
Islands 5/10

I haven't listened to the others that much. I've tried with Discipline but whether it's a dodgy remaster or just that I can't stand the vocal I'm rarely able to get through it.

The 2019 show I saw with the 3 drummers is still one of the best gigs I've ever been to. Ticket was pricey but it was totally worth it. As memorable as seeing Yes Symphonic around 23 years ago. Again quite an expensive ticket but a fabulous gig. After that it would have been Kansas 20 odd years ago.

With the Username 'Easy Money' one would presume LTIA is your favorite King Crimson album
