Sad News! He was a great guitarist, an essential part of Ange's sound. Will spin some tonight in his memory RIP.

Lou Donaldson passed at 98 just a few days before Mr. Haynes at 99.....man, both of these guys played with the heaviest of heavies - Miles, Monk, 'Trane, Bud, Blakey, and the list goes on and on. Man, Lou Donaldson.....dig those Blue Note albums with Jimmy Smith - that sax-organ-trio sound; or his quartets with Grant Green on guitar - f**king brilliant! Ahhh, here's to a life well played, gentlemen.

Jazz drummer extraordinaire Roy Haynes has passed away at the age of 99. He led his own groups for many years but also performed with people like Pat Metheny & Dave Holland (Question & Answer, 1990) and Gary Burton (Times Square, 1979).

Hi, I did not miss them intentionally ... in fact I thought about it earlier today and wanted to fix my post ... I was thinking that they defined the 2 drummer thing for a long time ... no other bands, really, have the ability or the guts to do it ... specially as long as they did. I think you have to have a very special musical ability and desire to share it with your best friends, to help create and define a band ... and the GD was that and then some. I find it nice, that the guy Daily Doug has listened to a couple of things and even appreciated the incredible musicianship in the GD ... on creativity alone, they helped define what became known as progressive, which is now all "prog-rock" and not exactly progressive anymore.

RIP Phil.. loved everyone in the band and the way you all interacted and the music you made.. as much a family as a band. You kept the whole outfit rooted in the earth whilst everyone's heads were up in outer space!
I must say i do find it a bit offensive to imply that Bill Kreutzman and Micky Hart were not 'really important' parts of the band.. i mean, they WERE the beating heart and the out-there percussion for the Whole life of the band! |

^ Yes and not only that, they should probably be added. They made at least two progressive rock albums and that fits the PA requirements.

Hi, Indeed ... I think Bob Weir is not the only one left that was really important ... the sad thing is that this is the end of an era of music that was astonishing, and while it does not exactly fit the PA decisions, the tough part of it all is how much influence the GD was on so many bands, especially in Europe where the commerciality of the whole thing was not as important as it is in America ... but with that said, they sold very well despite their allowance of folks to record their shows ... and many of them were far out ... and the GD had the greatest and BEST sound system of any band out there. RIP Phil, and the best for the family. BTW, I accidentally failed to include Bill K and Mickey Hart ... and I apologize for that ... they were great and I had the opportunity to be in one of those drum fun things in Eugene that Mickey used to put together way back when (at the Fair) ... the famous one that is private one night and the ladies ... fun time, and then some!

No bigger bummer than losing Phil Lesh - thanks for it all, Phil. I used to file to the Phil Zone at shows back in the day just to watch the guy's face when he played - there was such joy in what he was doing that it couldn't help but be infectious......the cat was all about love. RIP Mr. Lesh.
