What of course, a lighter, ambient Ayreon as the name suggests... |

Ok, if its Rocket Scientists you like (so do I), try Iluvatar; a symphonic neo-prog band who are also on the Kinesis label...try 'Children' (1995) first... you might like Cairo as well...they are on Magna Carta...try 'Conflicts & Dreams' (1998) first...both are significantly lighter than the Symph X!! |

I almost forgot: If you like all of the Ayreon albums, then you should most definitely get Ambeon, too.

Thanks for tips! More is welcome, heh.
I got Ayreon's 'The Final Experiment' remake last week and it's fantastic. Ayreon's 'Ayreonauts Only' is the only one I don't own. 'Into the Electric Castle' rules too. These two full length albums together with 'Human Equation' are Ayreon's top three for me. I had Symphony X's 'V- The New Mythology Suite' once and didn't like it. Sold it. My friend needed some space for his huge records collection and there 'V' was again! It still doesn't move me, I'm afraid. Rocket Scientists and Erik Norlander's solo stuff seems to work for me. Must hunt the albums down. |

I admit I'm not a big Ayreon fan, but you might like to try the following: Shadow Gallery: Room V Symphony X: The Mythology Suite Both bands have had members collaborate on Ayreon projects, and these two albums are excellent. The only other album I have heard sound anything like Ayreon, would be Martin Darvill's Greatest Show On Earth. Again, it's a concept piece performed by a cast of about 20 (including Don Airey ex Rainbow on Keys)... that album would be worth both Mike & The Progtologist checking out as well; you could pick it up cheap on ebay or for £8.50 (c12 Euros) from GFT Ltd Tel 0044 208397 1998. Hope this is of some help. Edited by fandango |

Heather Findlay also sang for Ayreon. BTW: Check out my thread about Stream of Passion, Arjen's new band. |

If you haven't heard them yet, go get Final Experiment, then get Electric Castle (which is even superior - maybe the best work of an entire decade by anyone). You'll thank me later. You'll may have a tough time finding someone else like them since Arjen Lucassen's writing style is so unique. |

Well, Ayreon is quite unique mixture surely.
Presto Ballet has some similar elements for sure (spacey keys, guitar work)! Sound good, thanx MikeEnRegalia!! By the way, there's better/longer clips on the official PB site, click here. Edited by Lane |

I don't know any band that really sounds like Ayreon - but you might want to try Presto Ballet. Not as many vocalists, but really great 70s retro prog rock. Click the album to get some samples from amazon - try The Fringes and Speed of Time. BTW: if you're wondering why I linked to amazon.de - amazon.com doesn't have audio samples yet. The subject line pretty much says it all. I got Lucassen's Star One album already.
Prog metal with folky and "medieval" bits thrown in, probably... Is that Ayreon?! Well, can you help me somewhere in that direction, please! |
