This is turning out to be a No longer like it here anymore because of...
fill in the blank.
We are all from different cultures and have different attitudes about politics and religions. Peter is trying to say that we should try to stay within music topics and our sense of humour shouldn't offend anyone's deeply held beliefs.
I agree with Peter. However I also know that it's not a perfect world and feathers do get ruffled from time to time.

Well ADIOS from me as well kids.
I've had all of the Hate America crap here at Doom Metal Archive forums that I care to take.
MAX@ and manni - no reflection on you. You guys are great. But the inmates are taking over the asylum.
To some of you, and you know who you are, I'll continue to check PM's and such. I'm glad to have met you. Perhaps we can exchange email addresses.
To the rest of you, and you know who you are, I hope you are happy continuing to wallow in your own filth. Good riddance to you.
Bye

I should say so. Ye who have yet to post your Aussie countenance in the Gallery for all to see and make fun of repeatedly.
It's not the chips, American of English, don't care for them, mate. It's the beer and lack of pounding the pavement. At least my chilly willy doesn't shrink in the cold breeze of the night air.

I want to thank all who have offered me support and/or expressed regret at my departure from the Forum, both here and in Private Messages.
I remain firm in my resolve to exit the Forums -- this should indeed be the last post you read from me here, at least for the foreseeable future.
I leave with no ill will -- the recent religious/political/personal acrimony on this Forum gave me the final push I needed to re-evaluate my computer use, and to get control of a habit that had basically become an addiction (878 posts, many of them lengthy, represents a lot of time here!), and an overall source of more pain than pleasure. This move had been contemplated for some time. My time is simply better spent with my family, work, books, music and reviews. It was great fun while it lasted, and I made some friendships here that I think will last. I will continue to check my Private Messages every couple of days, so no one need think that I will be forever unreachable.
I know myself too well to think that I could simply reduce my Forum time, or avoid all political/religious arguments. My departure has to be all or nothing.
In closing, I urge all to remember that what you write here goes out to the world, and the world is a big place of widely divergent views. Concentrate not on those things that divide us, but upon that which we have in common: a love of music, and a desire to be treated with respect and dignity. Remember that there is a human being behind each post and nickname. If you wouldn't say it to someone's face in public, don't say it here.
All the best to all (and the Forums),
and again, thanks for the support and good times!
Change is good!
Sincerely,
Peter Rideout

That it should come to this.......
I too, can fully respect Peter's reasons for departure from the forum, and have to say the forum will be a poorer place without him - he has always been the voice of reason when threads have descended into abuse, and his contributions have always been a highlight of many threads, whether they be about the more arcane aspects of this thing we call 'prog', posing brain teasers, or just letting his sense of humour run riot.
Peter, I can only echo Dude:
"let that question mark be more than just a mark on a page"
You will be sorely missed

Dude:
You said: "personally i beleive there should be a code of conduct or set of guidelines that should be read by anyone wishing to join the forums, as a condition to joining."
I agree with you, but, as the saying goes, "be careful what you wish for." If you read the recent "civility" thread (which appears at the top of all categories), you will see that my implementation of two reasonable guidelines met with some fairly stiff backlash. For the most part, everyone has observed the two new guidelines. However, I hesitate to think what might happen if I were to add further guidelines.
Still, if Peter's "bowing out" from the forums helps to get more people to follow the two basic guidelines - and, as Peter magnificently puts it, to "stick to the music" (and avoid ultimately irrelevant (and almost always inflammatory) topics like politics and religion) - then this can only be a good thing. And Peter knows this.
Peace.

Peter, I just want to say that in the short time that I've been here that I've found you to be a true gentleman and someone that we need more of around here. Try to ignore the offensive trolls that surface now and then. They will become bored after a while and hopefully leave.
Please reconsider.

I have enjoyed our private chats and understand your reasons!
i made an idiotic contribution to the recently deleted "READ THIS" THREAD for which i apologise most sincerely to everyone!!......and as a man with religious beleifs it my seem odd to say but i would prefer there be no talk of religion at all.
its just to messy.
whether we like it or not there are "taboo" subjects such as religion and politics that are really not appropriate(or relevent!) to this site and we do have to be careful of what we say, and be aware of the diverse cultural beleifs and perceptions represented here(in that regard i have made some "ripper blunders"(as we say in my country) that have got me the ocassional cyber slap on the hand)
personally i beleive there should be a code of conduct or set of guidelines that should be read by anyone wishing to join the forums, as a condition to joining.
Peter and i have had many verbal jousts(he was always a gracious loser) and now who will i tell my balzac jokes to??
JIM???....to busy dancing(GO TWINKLE TOES!!)
DANBO???......nah! he is still on that lake in the Sierras i think
VELVE???.........nope,..to fixated with Mariah
Peter:let that question mark be more than just a mark on a page.

Peter, I respect and fully condone your reasons. Hopefully, you will continue to make occasional posts to the forum when time and inclination permit.
I too am troubled by the non music related postings, but shall simply choose to ignore them.

I'm glad you put a question mark after the title, as it gives me hope that you will not do this dastardly deed. Think not of yourself but the impact you are having on others - who will Danbo taunt now? Who will reign in the wild and dangerous VelvetClown? Who else could stand up intellectually to Dick Heath?
I ask you to think twice before you unleash the Gartens, the Jorens and the Vibes on the rest of us...
(partly) in fun
