Topic: Neal Morse's lyrics Posted: July 17 2012 at 18:38 |
I actually rather like the religious themes in his lyrics, but I think a lot of the time they're pretty badly written. Option #2 for me, though - even when they're bad, I don't find them annoying in the slightest. The music's just too good.

I'm usually not bothered by the lyrics but there is the odd occasion (especially live) where he goes a bit over the top and it gets a bit embarrassing to listen to.
Ultimately, the lyrics are irrelevant, though.

Love his lyrics as they resonate with me. How come we don't have polls that ask what we think about band like Opeth, Cynic, and Pain of Salvations lyrics? (love those bands anyway) Just curious...

I like them; most of them are well written - and a bit preachy now and then.

In between. Most of the time they personally resonate with me. Other times, they are horrifically clumsy.

The only thing he's done which I've listened to a lot of would be transatlantic. The first two albums I was fine with, really liked them as a matter of fact, but Whirlwind they became bad enough in places that it was difficult to ignore. Normally I like to pay attention to lyrics, It's an aspect of some of my favourite music that really enhances it in my opinion. If the lyrics are just pretty words to go with a song then fine (a chance missed in my opinion, unless you are specifically prioritising the sound words make for musical purposes), but when a song is specifically written around lyrics I find poor, then it can kind of sour things for me. Annoying is fair, but certainly not anger inducing, and he clearly is a very talented musician, I'm not trying to pour hate on anyone here. If People like it then good for them.

I was reading some days ago in the Neal Morse forum a thread about his religious lyrics, the christian themes and the reaction they arouse on the listener. Some non-believers find them even disturbing in some cases, when others simply don't care too much. The question is simple: do you find Neal's religion-inspired lyrics annoying to the point of influencing your listening experience with all those biblical and almost doctrinal references or you just enjoy the beautiful music? I'm agnostic, but I personally don't care about that, since english is not my first language and the effect those lyrics have on me is quite different..
