There are a number of albums I love here, and some I don't. Crossings is one of my favouritest albums, and will get my vote. That said, I was still quite tempted to vote for John Coltrane's Expression -- not often at PA that I get the chance to vote for any Coltrane (yeah, of course I could at Jazz Music Archives)I also love the Art Bears' album, VdGG's (I think it's an excellent album), National Health's, and like that Henry Cow one considerably. And I like the Caravan album.

Marillion's best album and absolutely essential to any collection.

Definitely this. Buy it!

You should definitely get Vital,it's a terrific live album. One of their best albums in my opinion.

Also National Health and Hopes and Fears.

Fugazi feels more versatile than the other Fish albums, has more to offer I guess. And the title track is one of the best things they've ever done with Fish or H.
I like Misplaced Childhood and CAS a little more though.

I can't agree, nor disagree, but I have "Queues and Cures" and I love it!

One thing you need to take note of. Is that the albums are not that similiar. The debut is much more playful and accesible and doesn't really sound like any other Canterbury album. Queues and Cures on the other hand is a much more standard Canterbury album with complex and jazzy organ parts. I like both albums, but the debut fills a gap in my collection that no other album can fill.

Fugazi by Marillion - Probably my favorite of the Fish era, and I much prefer it to Script or Clutching at Straws. The songs are all good and Fish's dramatic approach to vocals is over the top. The music follows suit.

Crossings by Herbie Hancock - A stunning tour-de-force of fusion. One of the best of the genre. More comparable to Miles than Mahavishnu Orchestra or Return to Forever.

Ocean by Eloy - This is different from Floating, which had a harder more psychadelic edge to it. Ocean, in contrast, is more carefully composed in a manner that is comparable to Yes. In other words, it is symphonic.

Once again, there are albums here from artists I like, but I don't have or aren't familiar with. This includes the other Eloy albums listed, The Tangent, and again Caravan. I am also not familiar with this title from Coltrane, but I will say I prefer his earlier straight releases rather than his later avant-garde styles. A Love Supreme and Giant Steps are great albums of his.

Agreed with all of this.

I sampled "Fugazi" on Youtube earlier today and I enjoyed it quite a bit. I found it to have a harder edge that other Marillion records and a bit less predictable, which I like.

I would definitely consider Caravan - in fact that band never lets me down. In the Land of Gray and Pink and If I could do anything I would do it all over you are all flawless Canterbury.
INteresting choice for Aerosol grey Machine as its my least fave VDGG album and I have the lot. Nevertheless it is worth getting but Hammill is not as good on that one and it contains some bad moments. However the remaster has a terrific bonus track worth a listen.
My review here sums it up - 2 stars

Perhaps this is on a par with King Crimson or Genesis' early works. Extremely experimental and wonderfully weird throughout. Very hard to like on a first listen though some fanatics will disagree. Don't listen to them. This really does have some rubbish such as the title track. I have all the VDGG albums and received this last on protest of hearing about it. I need not have bothered. It doesn't hold a candle to future releases such as the brilliant Pawn Hearts, H to He, Godbluff or The Least I can do. Heck, even the recent releases Present and Trisector bury this album for sheer production quality and songwriting. This debut rarely troubles my CD player, and I must admit I have listened to it fully for a grand total of 3 times. I heard it yesterday again and cringed, trying like heck to like it but failing miserably. It was a drag even listening to the first 3 tracks, in fact the last three are better.

But here it is in all its glory - the debut for VDGG. I am trying not to be negative but this is getting difficult. Lets look at the highlights. There are highlights, people.

Octopus -THE highlight for certain, a track that appeared as a bonus on a VDGG classic, live in concert with Squid. It is better played with Squid though. People You Were Going To - a very short quirky thing that works well enough. Well, folks that about wraps this one up.

PLEASE do not judge this wonderful band by this album. Grab the other albums to follow with eager anticipation of opening your senses to perhaps the greatest 70s prog band in history. Their recent stuff is excellent too. But this debut - well, 2 stars for fans and completists.

I appreciate that, but I already have all of the VdGG stuff, except for "Aerosol Grey Machine", "Trisector", and "Vital" and I enjoy all of them! My first album was "Pawn Hearts", as it was a Christmas gift a couple of years ago! I already have "In the Land of Grey and Pink" and a family member has already received a list from me containing "If I Could Do It All Over Again ..." I appreciate you looking after a fellow progger, though!

Indeed it does. I'll take as much Canterbury as I can get.

Fugazi (one of my favourite Marillion albums) and the slightly underrated Cunning Stunts. With National Health you can't go wrong.
Edit: and an additional vote for Silent Criens and Mighty Echoes. I didn't notice that this album was on the list yet...
