An enthusistic Rush fan i met at a yes concert told me about Rush in Rio and called it the best Live album of all time.49 dollars later i was in possesion of a turgid can of festering noise posing as a rock concert. All the favourites were there but a combination of awful recording (with apologies from the band in the liner notes) and an overenthusiastic brazilian football crowd left this CD a real let down . The DvDee was slightly better especially in stereo but really what I was watching and listening to was a grungy sound to complement Vapour trails and a very excited crowd. OK the crowd created a fantastic atmosphere and it would have been wild being there but being a Football and Rugby fan i have experienced this sort of thing many times. So if you are interested in watching a lot of fans jump up and down and sing along then this is for you. If you would like to listen to classic Rush well recorded then forget it save your money. So after spending a hundred bucks on a cd and dvd i can only say i was had! |
i agree with buddy !!! i am a big rush fan and this was a disapintment the sound quality is really bad sometimes very lousy the guys played very well and it was an excellent play list specially songs like natural sciences and la villa was fun to watch donot get me wrong the dvd is fun to watch ,but not loud. i desagree with you about the excited crowd i have been rush many times and it exciting to have excited crowd. my first rush concert was when their were touring counterpart and i could't get a good seat and i had a seat all of the way up to top and the people around me i do not why in the f**king world when to see rush. they were not moving a muscle , one guy even ask me to sit down and i said f**k off i did come to f**king to sit down i came to see on of the best prog metal band in the whole world. so, that is actually great is great to watch exciting fans of a non english speaking country. this dvd i only recomended to hardcore fans. it is not for avage rush fan!!!!!

You paid $100 for the Rush in Rio dvd and cd? That's probably twice what they sell for on Amazon.com. Why did you pay so much?
Secondly, the sound isn't the best, but it's a great show. I can't say any of my prog dvds really have "great sound" - my Genesis definitely doesn't, my Marillion dvds are so-so, Saga is ok, King Crimson is so-so, Gong is decent, but I'd still rather have great bands doing great performances than a crystal-clear sounding Linkin Park dvd.

Aus 100 dollars =65 US approx
Prog Rock is difficult to procure here in the shops and when you do see it on the shelves you tend to snap it up.
Australia has a poor track record of supporting Prog rock it is a very redneck bourbon and coke v6 engine with mags rock loving country. Yeeeeuck!

Maybe you are not very keen on live shows when they are done in big
football stadiums, because they will always be like this: lots of fans
jumping up and down, singing along (even along instrumental music, like
YYZ). And, you know, this is a big part of the experience of the show
that they are trying to convey to you.
I know this is not everybody's cup of tea, because there are
compromises that you have to make to accept it (one of them being
audience interaction). If you are going to it because you want some
classic performances (in a stadium, with a frantic crowd of 50,000+), you are certainly in for major disappointment.
The sound mixing is subpar, granted. But there are ways to make it sound better if you have a good home theater system.

Compared to say Symphonic Yes which has a more a more sedate audience in the classical mould but where the music is just there to be listened to and what a joy it is. Gates of Delirium and Ritual are treated with the greatest of respect by the band who put everything into it without going OTT in a rock and roll sense. Other Dvds i have enjoyed were Pendragon in Poland for the simplicity and the clarity of the music and for me the all time classic ABWH an evening of yes music.Close to the edge on that one seems slightly quicker in tempo and has a vibrancy from Brufords electric drum kit. Interestingly no squire.Great great concert though.well worth the 100 dollars it cost me on e bay.
