The one on the moon is activated by the sunlight.

And whether it is "another universe" is up for argument. It probably isn't, but it is another place. A created place.

^^ No, nothing activates them. They simply are there and man reaches to them out of curiosity.
One teached apes to use tools.
The one on Clavius is activated to send a signal to Jupiter as soon as it is about to be photographed.
The one over Jupiter allows access to another universe.
The one in the Renaissance room transpfrms Bowman to starchild.
