You are right of course.
Banks wasn't a fan of ELP has to be said. He preferred The Nice.
The Nice were a very influential band in the late sixties. Deep Purple took a lot of notice of them and you can hear a bit of Jon Lord doing something very much like Rondo on Made In Japan.
ELP were much more of a showcase for the individual talents of each member and were considerably more symphonic in approach than Genesis. For what its worth Keith Emerson was very fond of Genesis in the early days even if the feeling wasn't reciprocated!
btw I love The Knife and that got my vote as well just in case it wasn't clear from my post.

A certain amount of irony in this poll as Banks was inspired to write the main keyboard riff for The Knife after hearing The Nice - Rondo (Rutherford was a big fan apparently of Emerson's previous band and played Rondo to Banks who was impressed by the excitement and aggression of the peice)
ELP are my favourite band but Knife Edge is probably one of my least favourite tracks by them. Heavily disjointed with Palmer actually struggling to back up Emerson's brilliant organ work. The lyrics are not my cup of tea either and sound a bit ridiculous even for ELP. This was ELP as work in progress and trying to find their feet.
Some might wonder why they keep trotting it out.Mostly I believe because the song does suit Greg Lake's deep baritone voice. He can comfortably sing it which can't be said of a lot of other ELP tracks.

I tend to like my prog songs, especially those with the word 'Knife' in the title, to have a little edge. So ELP of course.

Picked Knife Edge although I have a framed, signed by Paul Whitehead print of the Trespass cover hanging above my bed. ELP was the first band to get me into prog and Knife Edge had a part in that. The Knife is brilliant but Genesis was to come to bigger and better things. I will always take the Genesis Live version with Collins and Hackett over the Trespass version.

I can vaguely remember hearing both pieces for the first time. Knife Edge on an FM station out of Detroit (I lived in London, Ont.). I used to run a wire from the cable connection of the TV in the family room to my bedroom so that my little radio got better reception. Hearing that song in the distant static of the air waves late at night (11pm'ish, I was only 12 yr old at the time) was unbelievably compelling for me. As for The Knife, it was either on Don Kirshner's Rock Concert (midnight on a Friday) or The Midnight Special (I think it was called) on a Saturday night, by that time I was around 14 yrs old. I had only heard Nursery Crymes and Foxtrot at that point and had only seen them perform Watcher of the Skies on one of the aforementioned shows. The Knife was good, but I have to side with Knife Edge.

I usually give my love to Genesis but I chose ELP this time. They may be showing off but I love that rocking Hammond.

When ever I listen to ELP i mostly just hear 3 guys being pompous. Given they have several amazing tracks such as "Take A Pebble". But Genesis they do everything for the sake of beauty not just showing off. Genesis was a band of artists. ELP was a band of instrumentalists trying to show off their impressive skill.

As some have said before me: both being excellent tracks, but I choose The Knife just before Knife Edge.
The Knife is so powerful. I love especially the last part, with the heavy drums and "Some of you are going to die" and the band accelerating. The Knife is a special ending of an album that is so pastoral for the rest.
