Queen.
Their 70's stuff is just perfect, specially the 74-76 period.

I prefer Queen but that is just because I don't care for Marillion post-Fish. If they had stayed together Marillion would now be among the great.

I do not hear Queen influences in Marillion's music. Or Rush influences

MArillion and Queen have played at gigs together, not just that one, which to me indicates that the music appeals to similar audiences. I had not read that Queen was influenced by Marillion, just my impression, but looking up wkipedia just now, which I know is not the most reliable resource, it mentions Queen being an influence: "The early works of Marillion contained Fish's poetic and introspective lyrics melded with a complex and subtle musical tapestry to create a sound that reflected the band's influences, notably Queen, early Genesis, Pink Floyd, Van der Graaf Generator, Rush (specifically from the late 1970s), and Yes. Marillion's first recording was a demo tape produced by Les Payne in July 1981 that included early versions of "He Knows You Know", "Garden Party", and "Charting the Single". I'm not sure why you don't at least consider Marillion AORish. I could see both bands have albums reviewed in a melodic rock/ AOR website. |

I was thinking musically -- just added that video in an edit as an afterthought. I think it helps to show that they can appeal to the same kind of audience, though. And I figured Queen might have been an infleunce on marillion music I'd say they have both made similar styled music,. Both can be very dramatic, both have made AOR, Arena rockish music. To me the music is not worlds apart. And both have made proggy music. Id say they're 'more similar than other music in the archives, say comparing Marillion with Univers Zero. [Quote] You cannot base your argument on only one song; Marillion does not play neither arena rock, nor AOR. Queen did not influence Marillion in any way.

^ they have nothing in common musically.
I've heard they toured together in the 80s, what do they have in common musically?

I really disagree that they have nothing in common. Why do you believe so? By the way, I wonder how a Queen cover of this Marillion track would've sounded. Edited by Logan - March 27 2011 at 11:58 |

Another completely random chosen (bands) poll; why compare these two bands that have nothing in common?
I've voted for Marillion.

Queen was simply a better band, and only on this website would a derivative group like Marillion be in the same discussion. The three consecutive albums Queen II, Sheer Heart Attack and A Night at the Opera are simply amazing. Controlled madness.
