Yeah, SGM belongs more to Avant-Prog than to Prog metal... i'm glad they're now on the RIO/Avant list...

Fantomas, Mr. Bungle, SGM ... they all belong in RIO/Avant-Prog. Mr. Bungle are already there, so what's the deal?

I think they're grouped as metal because there's such a stigma against metal sounds in other styles - if a metal band uses jazz sounds that's fine and still metal, but if a jazz band uses metal sounds a lot of jazz fans wouldn't give it a chance. That's not terribly clear, is it?

oh, for playing FLAC files:
Winamp, you need a file in_flac.dll,
foobar foo_flac.dll
Windows Media Player and iTunes i have no idea but there are ways.
To decode to wav to burn to a CD on PC I'd use a program called FLAC Frontend (http://members.home.nl/w.speek/download/FLAC_frontend.zip) as well as the FLAC codec (http://cyberial.com/flacinstaller.asp) Edited by goose |

IMO they're not at all a metal band. Perhaps they're more metal in live situations ... but Of Natural History is not a prog metal album. (that might explain why some people like it although they generally don't like metal). They're Avant-Prog or even RIO ... on their hompage they say that their motto is "Rock against Rock". |

What's that I hear? Two free live recordings? Seems that way:
NB I haven't listened to either so I'm not speaking for either the musical or audio quality!

I downloaded Of Natural History a little while back, and was pretty
impressed. It's weird, of course, but really creative and unqiue.

Saw them last night and they are pretty comical also. Definetly some of
the most talented or at least innovative group of guys + a gal i've
seen.

Well... now that you mention it... no, I still don't see many similarities between SGM's vocalist and Max Cavalera or Derrick Green (I think that's his name). And there is nothing wrong with Sep if you discount everything they released after "Chaos AD".

Its a little harder to get into, the first one, but I find it better. You should all check out Idiot Flesh if you like SGM. Members of Idiot Flesh formed SGM after they broke up. |

"Of Natural HIstory" is probably the best album I've heard in a very long time. Buy it... |

I'm knowing just few records of the artists mentioned here, mainly due to the fact that they are not my favs (SGM isn't neither, but they are interesting, that's different). Tom Waits I can't follow that much this idea, he's got strange vocals that's for sure, but I use to associate him with some strange songwriter music style, he's got nothing to do with metal, as far I know, but SGM has a quite high input of metal, if you ask me. The Avantgarde influences might come from the other bands ( Einsturzende Neubauten, the Residents). Mr. Bungle might be a reference for both Metal and Avantgarde, but I can't hear that much similarity, because I find most of their stuff rather boring! One question: Could this be another case of a desperate search for references within the more prog-ish and avantgarde genre for justification of liking a band. I'd still insist that the main influences of SGM come from Sepultura and Bjork (although both of them are not included on this site doesn't mean that they're not showing some progressive tendency!)

I second the recommendations for Of Natural History, a pretty phenomenal album although it kind of peters out for the second half. And the recommendation to see them live - they are pretty jaw-dropping, and it's fun to see all the bizarre homemade instruments they use. Luckily for us they tour incessantly.
The debut, Grand Opening and Closing, is pretty good too, with some more straightforwardly metal parts. I don't really recommend the live recording, unfortunately... a little too cut-and-paste postmodernist for me. |

You've got to admit that the male vocals remind a lot to this band! And what's wrong with Sepultura, apart of that they aren't my fav neither. What I wanted to say with this, is that someone liking them could as well try SGM one!
Sepultura?!?! What the hell do SGM have to do with Sepultura?!? [/QUOTE] |
