Tough one. As songwriters, Genesis, Banks and Rutherford in particular, can stand against anyone (even Lennon/Mcartney) . On the other hand as explorers of music and defenders of integrity, KC is without parallel. Genesis music has given me more pleasure though and ultimately thats what its about.

Well after Genesis trounced Yes so thoroughly in the three time re-match/ re-hash ... do you dear prog listener think..."That's All?" or do you have "The Power To Believe? " King Crimson.

"In the Court of the Crimson King" lies "The battle of Hastings" and the "Escenses""Between Flesh and Divine" with the "Mirage" of a "Camel"!

Poll's over! The winner of Round 4 Division 1 of Battle of the Prog Bands is King Crimson. They will now move onto the Finals, and Genesis is out of the tournament. See you at the next match of Battle of the Prog Bands!

Funny, my first inclination was to compare Genesis to Mozart. But when I consider all of the post-Hackett material, I maintain that Copeland is a better analogy. After all, my stance was that Genesis is catchy while King Crimson is moving. Sorry, I can't agree with you about the Wagner analogy. King Crimson is to Prog as Bach is to Classical imho. |
Considering all of the post-Hackett material you can't compare Genesis with any classical composer. You are right of course about "King Crimson is moving" but they have lost their spirit during this movement IMO (it's not about Discipline that is a really great album). For me Genesis is a Band till 1977 after this year it's a commercial organization
P.S. For me VdGG is Bach

But perhaps you are referring to style whereas I am referring to influence, so I do understand your viewpoint.

I think another reason why we have less votes here than in the polls between Genesis and Yes, and Genesis, Yes and PFM, is that quite a few of us are unable to decide which band we like the most. At least that’s why I can’t vote here: A vote for G would be a vote against KC and vice versa, and either way I would have felt bad about it.

I was a huge Genesis fan before I discovered the music of KC. When I discovered KC, I listened to their first 8 albums in a row and I thought and still think, that I haven't heard any music in my life more beautiful! (Only ITWOP is a little behind, because I think it only repeats the themes of ITCOTCK). |
<font ="apple-style-span"="" face="Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif"><span ="apple-style-span"="" style="font-size: small;">Well stated. I like Genesis too, but I love King Crimson. Genesis songs always seemed to be a compilation of catchy tunes strung together into a long song (albeit with some great lyrics) and while they were pleasant and beautiful to hear, they sounded the same every time. King Crimson songs seemed more sophisticated; music that was not catchy but moving, and grew on me slowly until I craved it. For me, it's like comparing Copeland to Bach.</span> |
Wow!i though I was the only one who felt that way about Genesis!! |
