Topic: What's going on with the Zappa catalog? Posted: November 06 2010 at 09:49 |
I don't know, Gail Zappa's kind of a bitch. Frank wouldn't give a sh*t if someone was playing his music live (as long as they're playing it correctly) but you have to have special permission from the ZFT to do it. That's why there's this big fight between Gail and 'Project Object'.
All I want is the damn Roxy DVD and maybe some scores to study.

In any case if they few remaining music outlets on the planet are dumping the Ryko discs, it is probably in anticipation of new releases of the catalog...I know, I'm being optimistic. Maybe they are going to sell the whole works to iTunes. Stranger things have happened.

Warners is a distribution conglomerate htat doesn't care about artists, only the money they can make from anyone. The problem for Warners would be make a dollar but you have 15 titles, when they want 15 dollars for one title only! Which they are getting from many rap this and that and some of the other things out there.
The advantage of a distribution conglomerate is that they will ask for 12k albums and they will distribute that over 1900 stores ... whereas otherwise you have to hope that PA helps you enough to get a few hits so you and I can spend $10 dollars to buy the record, which we probably won't since we got it for free to listen to is and review it! ... or that YouTube or Facetiousbook helps you show your website enough to get attention and sell a little to pay all the bills.
But Warners needs to die ... because all they are doing is supporting the big numbers on the Billboard 100! And that is "forcing" the lesser labels and companies to not get representation or show up in more places. You won't see a lot of prog at Wal-Mart any time soon! So you know who the distributor is.
There is a down side to the "corporate" control thing ... you have to decide if that is what you want or not. Progressive music would not have survived if they did not have the internal constitution to be able to tell a record company to shove it ... and do their own work. But some bands got terribly hurt by it ... Yes is one of the saddest examples of it, and one of the most cruel of them all. |
So flippin' true man. Many people might think that you are going way off thread with this and completely out of bounds. I personally find everything you are saying here directly tied in with the subject matter itself. Very true and from my personal experience what you have stated has everything to do with why things are so very screwed up. There is more interest in the subject for me when things of this nature are pointed out. It has everything to do with honesty. Especially bands that got terribly hurt and the criminal pay off bullcrap in the business. Some music fans are far removed from the evils of the big music industry.

Whatever, I really don't care about getting yet another series of remasters. Everything is loud enough already. Not to mention that Zappa was such a dominant producer/worked with the best so that the originals still top everything else. Case in point Hot Rat's vinyl rip dominates all other mixes.
And I agree that Gale has been mostly a negative factor. Give me the damn Roxy video's. They finally released a teaser from it, but it's just from the same shows, not anything that is on the album. I NEED Village of the Sun>end of album in video format. |
there's a couple of random tracks from the roxy shows spread out throughout his YCDTOSA series, like Big Swifty, Montana, I'm The Slime, and maybe one or 2 more i cant remember, but it's just not enough. i want to hear and see every song that lineup played!!!!

Lay off the reefer, already! Frank gave up the rights to all his records to Rykodisc on his deathbed in order to spare Gail the trouble of dealing with the labels. However, she's kept the rights to his image and vault material. What has she done with this? She's banned covers and performances (even by ex-members!). She's released subpar comps (see all the "Joe's [X]-age" releases). She charges way too much for the vault fare she only occasionally puts out. And, worst of all, she doesn't listen to the fans at all. How long have people been clamoring for the Roxy DVD, again? And what do we get? Recordings from Senate hearings that are already in the public domain! Jeezus H. Christ.

so Warner technically owns the Zappa albums? what irony!!!
what i want to know is, why dont they just release the Roxy DVD/CD already??? forget about reissuing the catalog, it's probably going to be botched anyway. and if there's bonus tracks, ill be annoyed, because i dont want to re-buy albums for (most likely) live tracks, or studio jams. that album that came out a couple of years ago, One Shot Deal, was basically a mix of unreleased studio stuff, and live songs. i thought it was a neat addition to the catalog, but they should get the Roxy set out before they do anything else.
i thought one of the reasons Zappa Plays Zappa was formed, was so enough money could be raised to release it. I just dont understand!

Strangely, Zappa CDs seem to be rather easy to find in France (thanks to Harmonia Mundi or Orkhestra?)

I haven't heard anything but you can rarely find Zappa CDs in shops over here apart from the odd copy of Joe's Garage and the Greatest Hits one.

I know that there is some sort of dispute between Gale Zappa and Ryko. I don't know the details. But I do know that Barnes and Noble and FYE can no longer special order Zappa titles. Both staff workers stated that whatever is left over in the back room will be placed on the sales floor. Short of that, there is nothing to talk about. No one seems to know if his catalog is being recalled due to a law suit. My question is......Is Gale remastering his entire catalog with bonus material from each session? Amazon has copies available and a few independent vendors are selling his releases for $7.99 A piece. Why are they trying to get rid of his stuff at such a cheap price? As if to say that the titles will be out of print soon. If his catalog is completely pulled, we might have to wait a few years for remasters. Anyone here have an idea as to what is going on with this?
