I have. It is. ![LOL LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)
But thats the point......it was MEANT to be.
But then again.....is wearing tartan bondage trousers and sticking a safety-pin through your nose any less pretentious than wearing a cape?

As for 'dinosaur bands', same thing. If someone comes out now, and has Yes or Genesis influences, they are derided by the mainstream. But drag up those equally old Television/Clash/Pistols references, and it will be hailed a masterpiece. ![Ermm Ermm](smileys/smiley24.gif) |
The media (music critics+ tv/radio) always loved punk. Easy to program and easy to understand. It was regarded in the UK as a revolution yet when I was 15 I don't remember people of my age suddenly dropping their interest in Mike Oldfield,Yes,Genesis etc.
Punk did have some nice bands and very talented people but it was never the be all and end all of everything which is basically how critics and observers regarded it.That has continued to this day.Punk was cool (supposedly) while prog bands were silly, over theatrical and out of touch. That basic ingrained view will never be changed (and perhaps there is some truth in it ![Wink Wink](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley2.gif) )

I like him a lot, and I used to love reading interviews with him as well. Britain can be proud of him.
Nice vid by the way, and I'm sure the lead singer of Touchstone will attract many people to prog ![LOL LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif)

I dont dislike the guy to be honest. He makes me laugh. There was a documentary about him and PIL fairly recently which was quite interesting. He spoke very openly and eloquently about his life, and his upbringing and his influences, although I dont think Peter Hammill got a mention. I thought PIL's approach to making music was quite unique and in some ways quite progressive, up until the 'Happy' album, which gained them new fans, and lost them some of their old ones. That's when they 'broke' America, and a tour or so later supported INXS, and by all accounts blew them off the stage.

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy!

In all fairness, Lydon doesn't look entirely serious in that interview (or really at any time). Additionally, there were two obvious edit points in his portion of that clip. The context was largely up to the editor.
That said, I suspect he genuinely believes that ELP is crap. So do a lot of Prog fans (not me, to be clear).

Not sure thats true as as I said before he and Keith Emerson actually do get on and have spoken on more than one occasion.ELP in their own way were rebels and had a touch of arrogance.Something that punks (or ex punks) like Lydon can easily relate to.

Lydon is just a phony if prog was at the top of the charts every week this year he would reunite the sex pistols and record a new song called Anarchy In 9/8!!! that man is all about the money and is the opposite of a punk rocker, he's an old man who still hasn't escaped his mid life crisis.

I'd sooner watch John Lydon than some jokefest full of modern bands. Oh wait, I've already gone to see PiL. Quality classic attitude.

Lydon (and the vacuous mainstram rock press) still don't get it. Malcolm McLaren put together the most untalented band ever just to show that people will buy into anything, if you just sell it right. "The Great Rock & Roll Swindle" indeed. |
I wouldn't take it that far. At the time experiments STILL were all over the place in theater, film and music, and for all intents and purposes this was yet another expression that was as valid as the "angry young men" or 20 years earlier in the Brittish Stage! Bark loudly, and end up not saying a lot at all, but it makes for good staging! Thank you Good Night darling!
But Yes, it could be considered a great swindle in that advertising and publicity will convince you that anything is worth while so you spend your money and think it is good!
The chumps that bought into The Sex Pistols still can't get over that, and to this day revel in Lydon's supposed genius. He was a talentless buffoon, and probably still is. Why people worry over what he says is beyond me. |
I would not go so far as to say that he, or the band, did not have talent. Talent is almost a "preference" for what is supposedly right and proper, instead of what is in front of you ... and the majority of the 20th century arts have been about breaking down that convention to smithereens and something like the Lydon, Syd and Nancy, were just as good vehicles for that expression as anything else that the West End had to offer at the time ... no complaints there ... I can say that some other arts got lazy, and someone else brought the flame out to the stage ... I can handle that.
It's the same thing with today's might makes right concept and fan control of the media ... you end up convinced that this or that is good because it is mentioned in print, and what you and I say is not important ... it's what happens when you have the chance for freedom and the cage is open, but inside here you have a meal all the time .... all the time!
So guess what the commercial interests bank on? ... your inability to think and get out on your own. And think for yourself. ...Of course, you can think that Genesis is great all the time ... but anything else? You put on the new Rush, you're never going to listen to Ange! There you have it ... conditioning of the Pavlov's Dog variety!

Music is not just for listening ... it is for LIVING ... you got to feel it to know what's it about! Not being told! www.pedrosena.com
