Hmm... I'm thinking I might do out of 10, and give half marks etc
I'd also have the best of both worrlds because if I want 77% percent, for example, I can just list it as 7.7/10 ;)

Conor, you have already posted many more reviews than I have. I'm not familiar with many of those albums, but I had a look at your reviews of a couple of my favourites, Red and Apostrophe... these are fine reviews. For me, ratings aren't that big a deal... a good review should tell you all you need to know about an album, and your reviews do that. If you're happy adding a % rating that's fine... it's your review after all. Smile

Personally I don't care about ratings at the top or bottom of reviews at all. The stars give me a good idea of what the reviewer thinks of it and the review itself will give me reasons why, which is what really matters imo. Personally, if someone considers an album a masterpiece, I could not really if he thinks it's a 97% masterpiece or a 95% masterpiece. Also, those kind of ratings don't really convince me, as I probably don't get what makes album A, which might be completely different from album B, get a 1% higher rating. It seems just a bit too complicated to me. An 'out of 10' rating might work better if you don't feel satisfied with the 5 star rating.

I see not applicable (N/A) above most of your reviews (the ons I've looked at) which may cause confusion (most who see a review of yours will not be familiar with your style and may not know any other reviews of yours).  You should clarify that for causual readers.

I don't see much point tin the percent ratings, and in fact it might be pretty meaningless to most.  Will they understand what the percentage means (superficially I guess so), or what calculations you used to arrive at it? In fact, I don't see it as important.  How do you determine such an exact percentage?  I'm not a rater/reviewer so I feel silly commenting on such stuff, but I used to be passionate when it came to film reviews.

I suggested here years ago (Mike at progfreak is doing something similar and had similar ideas) that instead of a simple 5 star rating system, we fill in various fields to come up with an overall rating (say out of one hundred, then divide by twenty and round off).  For instance: progressiveness, professionalism, complexity.  I had ten fields figured out, but I forget what they were.  The point here being that the way you calculate it is as important as the result.  It's needed since the review should explain what you thought were the strengths and weaknesses, but...

You don't need a rating at all for a good review, but it happens to be required at this site.  I used to prefer reviews without ratings, but ratings are handy for this site.

Rating is not an exact science, and sometimes I think we're a bit too geeky about it.

For my reviews, you may have noticed that at the top, as well as the stars rating, I give a supplemental 'percent rating' because I think out of 5 is far too broad for a good review.

However, I've realized that an 'out of 10' supplemental rating (w/ half marks) might work better and be more accessible. What do you guys think?

If it sounds like a considerably better idea, I will edit my reviews to correspond.

Voice your opinions. Embarrassed
