Indeed, it is! |
You both couldn't be more right.
I smile ear to ear when I listen to this one and it is still getting better and better for me after each listen.
This may very well be the album of the year for me while ELOY's Reincarnation on Stage will probably be runner up. :)

The latest PT is pure symphonic prog in most parts anyway....I do not have a complete love for every bit of output from every band I have heard...too much fan-boyism there surely!!! Obviously a band with very limited output has more chance than those with prodigious discography's!!! However, still can't think of one artist - because they all have less than impressive tracks IMO....

King Crimson Genesis w/ Gabriel
That's about it. Oh, and PT is prog because they have the multi-part songs and dynamic arrangements tied to pop/rock songwriting.

To Guldmansen, I agree with that this is not the place for a progressive v. prog debate. Your points on the subject though were well taken. You are a gentle and a scholar.

Post-prog is a sophisticated progressive alternative rock, plainly saying. It draws influence from classic prog as well and any instruments can be used. Porcupine Tree, Anathema or iamthemorning are a good examples of post-rock-based post-progressive music. The Mars Volta is an example of punk-based post-prog etc.

As far as the semantics regarding the difference between the words prog and progressive, this is exactly the reason why so many non progressive bands are listed on this site and are held to the same artistic levels as progressive bands. As for the Strawbs, they were never a prog-rock (I think that's the term you were looking for) only act like early Yes and Genesis, just occasional dabblers. |
No not progressive music but prog. That's why we haven't included Pere Ubu and The Fall, which both were progressive and rock yet don't belong on PA. We deal with prog ie the genre.
Most prog albums made nowadays aren't progressive, and they don't need to be in order to be on this site.
I agree with you in regards to The Strawbs, not really a prog band however close they came with Hero & Heroine. Great band though:-)
Most of the bands that are here who are not prog bands have their reasons for being here though. Most of the subs we've created on PA are filled to the brim with such acts, but back in prog's heyday these did zoom in and out of the genre - often inspired by the scene or conversely inspiring it.
Anyways back on topic here! I don't want this thread to turn into yet another prog vs progressive bouts.

Porcupine Tree are so-called post-progressive for my ears. It's definitely not classic prog (thankfully though, there's been enough masterpieces released fourty years ago). Post-prog surely has a different sound and I would call it a separate genre, but it is simply the progressive music of today.

A tad more progressive than latter day Strawbs eh Doesn't matter whether they're progressive though - being progressive is not a badge of honour y'know. I do have a sneaking feeling that you are one of those who interchange the adjective 'progressive' with the noun 'prog'. While I would call PT prog, I'm not entirely sure I'd call them progressive (maybe back in the 90s). Anyhoo, doesn't take away from the enjoyment I get out of the music, progressive or not

Trying to come up with a prog band that can do no wong I believe is nearly impossile because of experimantation that doesn't work or bands going the commercial route but I will go with Cynic from Fla. Strangely, I'm not impressed with Tool, perhaps because of their week musical chops. Rock bands that can do no wrong would be the Beatles and Led Zep. Both groups have only one studio album that I don't like.
