It depends if the artist needs money or not. If I rent a copy of Asia's Phoenix and burn myself a copy, these guys won't be struggling for the rest of their lives. I do try to buy music by smaller artists, though. I tend to download first, and if I like it I usually buy it.

I have mixed feelings about this subject. Bands need to make money in order to produce music. If they post their music free on the internet, most people will download and not buy the CD. But if the band is to achieve wider recognition, they really need to get their music where others can hear it, and the internet is the perfect way to do this. So it's a vicious circle.
In general I'm in favour of music being made available for others to hear it though streaming or legal downloading on sites like this one, MySpace, Last.fm and others because there still are enough people who, like myself, who will hear it, like it, and then buy it. |

There are more and more examples here and there, it's becoming like a new "model". Another famous example is NIN. Floydispink : Thanks, this topic interests me for sure Edited by Anaon - July 30 2009 at 13:43 |

If you are interested in the reasons people have for buying CD's or why they do or don't illegally download, you might like this thread: http://www.progarchives.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=59533.

I don't afford donating to bands which have given away free music, but in the future I'll be able to do that. Except for Radiohead's "In Rainbows" I've never heard about albums being released as both purchasable CD and free download. (I'm referring to the bands I like, otherwise I know it happens).

Well sorry for the confusion then... Maybe I should edit my first post to add this is more about legal download, what do you think?
In an other hand, people who illegally download, also buy music, it's interesting to know the reasons that make them buy |

The results of the poll nearly frighten me: one could conclude (a bit quickly) that it's okay to "rip off" bands and artists that you don't like.
But I think the results have a lot to do with the question. I needed to see the post of Anaon where he explains he was talking about legal downloads to make my own mind. Example: the three CD of French death-metal band Carcariass are given on their site, yet I'm still ready to buy these discs. |

It doesn't sound contradictory to me, some people don't even want to hear about free downloads. But anyway, you're right, it's a bit confusing but I didn't want to be too explicit as illegal downloads exist and it's also interesting to know more about it.
I agree that it changes the way you can vote... |

That seems pretty contradictory to me, if a band releases a legal free download, they want you to download it. I really think the release of free legal download is a good thing for commercial succes of the band, for example, Maudlin Of The Well. The free legal download of Part the Second was a good excuse for me to try their music, and I really liked it. I'm sure I'm not the only one who has discovered the band by this free download. Anyway, when I wrote my last comment I thought this thread also was about illegal downloads, which is why I did vote for the first option. Now I know it is about legal downloads only I would vote option five: It depends on the quality of the music. Though I haven't yet come across a free download that good that it's worth spending my money on.

Let's say Floyd and U2 both have 100 trillion dollars, and I like them both, but Floyd more. I have enough money for both the joshua tree and dark side of the moon, but I buy Dark Side, cause I will always prefer Floyd over the money stealing bands like U2..

I was sure someone would ask this Because there are people who think that it's like "stealing" even if it's in a legal way, you know? It's just a general point of view about "free music", legal or not. |

It's not really a problem of the poll but the fact that if we talk about "downloading" today, it's necessarly illegal but it's not necessarly the case.
But I admit that I made this poll thinking of legal download : For example, a band who offers his album for free (mp3) but also sells it on CD or vinyl. |

I don't do illegal dowloads, it's a matter of morals and laziness. I like to have a hard copy of the album, definitely if an album has a very interesting or special artwork. If a band releases an album as a free legal download, I don't see no reason to not download it though. So, my vote goes to the first option.
