Pawn hearts is not my piece of cake, Godbluss stands far ahead of anything else for me. Not a weak composition, not a dull moment here!

H To He's my favourite album, although my favurite tune Refugees is on Least We Can Do ... I've only got 5 albums ... this is my order ...
1. H To He Who Am The Only One 2. Godbluff 3. Pawn Hearts 4. The Least We Can Do Is Wave Goodbye To Each Other 5. Still Life
For me, Still Life is a long way behind the others ...

Really difficult for me to choose between Godbluff and Pawn Hearts... I love both, and voted for the former only because it had less votes...

Voted Pawn Hearts, but it may change as I still haven't heard everything yet
Anyone care to list a top ten of songs from the different albums.
I only come to five (only the first albums)
1. Killer
2. Lemmings
3. A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers
4. Darkness
5. After The Flood

Tough!!!!! VDGG is one of my faves, and each album has it's merits.
I just picked up THE BOX. Though the quality of the live tracks on disk 2
is sh!t, the 4-disk set is still worth getting your hands on. (though I was
not happy with the shortened version of "arrow."
I cast my vote for best VDGG album for PH7!!
"Portion Down" is one of my favorite PH solo tracks,( along with "A louse
is not a home" and "Time Heals") plus, PH7 was my introduction to Peter
Hammill.

Still Life is my favourite, the most mature one IMHO. The last great album from Van der Graaf too. There's a lot of wonderful music on most earlier albums, too. Wonderful band. I hope to see them in july, in Holland. Great that they are back on the road again.

3. Aerosol Grey Machine
4. Still Life

The "second generation" albums have not listened since many years now, so take this list with "grain of salt".

Van Der Graaf Generator were easily one of the greatest bands of the era and one of the most consistent also; for me it's between 'Pawn Hearts' and 'H To He' for their best, yet 'Pawn Hearts' has the edge for being probably the most extreme album of the genre, and also one of the greatest.

PAWN HEARTS!!! Loved it from listen no. 1, in a cozy hall with my father sitting beside me and reading a newspaper: you should have seen how uncomfortable he felt most of the time (the explosive sax stuff, the weird melodies and harmonies, the disturbing psychedelic passages, and of course, Hammill's out-of-this-wrold singing), but I was in Heaven... My mom came to the hall for a while and politely said (she's an absolute lady): "That music is a bit strange, isn't it?" Poor her, she was in pain, too... but I was still in Heaven, and only when the final chords of 'Plague' faded out, we could all three be in Heaven: me, with the memory of a prog masterpiece, them, with the relief of knowing ut was all over. PAWN HEARTS!!!

Pawn Hearts sums up VDGGs classic, and arguably, best sound.
