Topic: Just out of pure curiosity... KISS Posted: December 31 2008 at 21:38 |
And in an unrelated item, Kiss was also the turning point where the typical "rock" audience/fan got younger. For prog, that's happening with some bands like Mars Volta, Tool, where you see teenagers with the T-Shirts. Along with many Extreme/Tech metal bands. The only "old" proggers that I see on these kids t-shirts are groups like Pink Floyd, Rush, Zep, Sabbath. I've seen a few Marillions, and one or two Gentle Giants. For another example, you could see the metal market skewing younger when Iron Maiden hit it big. Then it was no longer cool to be a 13yr old male still listening to "pop". SO nowadays, any act with some decent success, short of the avant-garde/jazz scenes seems to get a share (which varies on the genre) of a wider demographic than 30 years ago.

I don't listen to a ton of Kiss, but from the five albums (not including compilations) of theirs that I own, Alive is the best.

The first, or hotter than hell. The first album is basically them wishing they were as good as the New York Dolls, while Hotter than Hell is them playing quite a few good tunes influenced by NYDs. So its up to you.

For the sort of music it is, their eponymous debut isn't bad. However, KISS just seemed to grow progressively worse with each album.

IF i'm getting some KISS albums, i'll probably get only the 70's ones, up to and not including "Dynasty".

I only heard two... Destroyer was just unmemorable hard rock and Dynasty - just pure disco garbage. so all i can really recommend is to stay away from Dynasty

Their live albums are generally pretty kick ass, so that is probably a pretty good way to start with them. Being an 80's guy, I do like Lick It Up, Animalize, and Asylum, but you are right in that they are glam metal or hair metal albums.

80'S and 90's albums are also very good. Probably hot in the shade is the worst.
Since there is no Carnival of Souls I chose Alive! It's a shame no one wants to vote. Also Paul Stanley solo album is really good , it has two amazing power ballads.
But if you want the best of the 70's get Double Platinum.
