From Riverside's official website:

"For their 10th birthday Riverside have prepared a special release which will be available during the forthcoming tour. The EP entitled "Memories In My Head" contains 33 minutes of fresh music. The songs have the following titles:

1. Goodbye Sweet Innocence
2. Living In The Past
3. Forgotten Land

Mariusz Duda: This new material, concerning (for obvious reasons) the themes of the passing time, will be a pleasant surprise for those who have missed the specific kind of melodies and space known from the bands early releases. We have consciously gone back to our beginnings to create a certain kind of a circle. This mini-album will contain three longer compositions most resembling those from our first two albums. The result is a quite interesting, spacious, film-soundtrackish, nostalgic, and most of all rock mixture, summing up our career's first decade quite well. "Memories In My Head" is an album which appears out of nowhere, without much promotion; we hope, though, that its content can defend itself and that it will evoke a lot of positive emotions. It does that to us, and we will prove it soon, playing those songs live at our upcoming gigs.

The concerts at which it will be possible to buy this minialbum and hear the new songs live will begin on 5th of May in Prague (CZ) and finish on 29th of May in Warsaw (PL). Tides From Nebula, a band from Poland, will support Riverside at the 12 European concerts, and the Pineapple Thief from Great Britain and Paatos from Sweden will do the same at the 6 Polish gigs."

I'm glad to see some new Riverside material, although getting a hold of a copy of this new EP will be quite hard for us here in the U.S.  I'm hoping a few people will try sell some copies on eBay or something.

News from Redemption's facebook page:

Hello everyone.  Time for a long overdue update on a few things!  So sit down with this when you’ve got a few minutes…it’s an extensive update!

First off, we are hard at work in pre-production for our upcoming fifth studio CD, which carries the working title of This Mortal Coil.

The band was really happy with Snowfall on Judgment Day and so when it came time to put together new material, with our own expectations for ourselves always on the rise, we gave a lot of thought to how to deliver the goods and step up our game yet again.

We have worked well with some excellent producers in the past and they have put their mark on our sound, especially Tommy Newton with whom we did two records and who we tried to involve early enough in the production process to help shape the records.  But even with Tommy, most of the involvement came after we were finished with songs.

For this record, I thought we could bring in an outside producer very early on.  Someone to help shape the music and raise the bar for us, challenging our ideas and getting the best from the band.  I knew I wanted somebody with a depth of experience that reflected the many things Redemption pursues in its music: melodic but heavy; intricate and complex when called for, but accessible; a bit of virtuosity but always in the service of the song.  This is a tall order, when you think about it.  We would need a producer, ideally, who had extensive experience in pop music but also maybe jazz fusion, had worked with somebody like Kansas, had worked with somebody like Nevermore, had extensive experience in heavy technical music (like, say, Spiral Architect or even somebody like Nile) and hopefully also had particular domain expertise in prog metal (maybe someone like Queensryche).

Fortunately, such a producer exists!  I am delighted to announce that we will be working on This Mortal Coil with Neil Kernon, whose extensive CV includes all of those bands.  He has immense experience in song craft, creating compelling intricate music across a variety of genres.  It’s a great fit for what we are looking for right now.  He is, simply put, a legendary producer and we are really fired up to work with him.

Neil and I have known each other socially for several years, and actually about three years ago he called me and asked if Redemption would be interested in creating a “Rage for Order for the next century.”  Uh, YES, we would!  However, at that time, we were already down the road withSnowfall on Judgment Day so I explained that we would have to table the conversation until the next record.  And then, of course, I had to take a little time off for my medical adventure (I’ll provide an update on this below…things look good, though).

So when the time came to consider how to make sure our next CD is our best (a goal we will always have!) I thought immediately back to that conversation.  And as Neil and I spoke about the possibilities, it became obvious to us both that this could be a very special opportunity to make a really great CD.  So we are really going to dig into pre-production together beginning just a few weeks from now and needless to say, I’m really looking forward to it!

I’ve been working on the basic structure of the songs for a couple of months now, and the band is very pleased with how things are coming together.  We are taking more time to explore different drum parts than we have done before, and working out bass and drum parts together in a more organic way than we have had the luxury of doing in the past.

So the songs are in a bit of flux now, but at this point it looks like we will have ten or eleven tracks, with a fair amount of compositional diversity between them but all having the strong melody, the aggressive riffing and the sense of emotional and musical urgency that we hope is core to all of Redemption’s music.  Some of the working titles include Noonday Devil, No Tickets to the Funeral, Rain in my Soul, Focus, Dreams from the Pit, Path of the Tornado, Blink of an Eye, Perfect, and Departure of the Pale Horse.  This is not a rock opera but the songs are tied together, loosely, by the theme of confronting our mortality.  You can imagine, given my medical adventure, that what I experienced would make its way into my songwriting.

After pre-production, we’ll get to tracking and mixing and all that good stuff.  We are shooting for a fall release date, assuming all goes well.  We’re also planning some pretty extensive and cool bonus materials, which will be fun to do and which we think our fans will really enjoy.

We also have some tentative plans right now to play out a bit more extensively than we did on the last CD in support of the record, and as things firm up I’ll be sure to let you know.

Finally, for those of you interested in the latest on my health, I continue to follow the very aggressive protocol of my brilliant doctor, Dr. Bart Barlogie, who is quite literally saving the lives of people diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma – he’s the only doctor in the world who believes it can be cured.  As of now, I remain in complete remission and have been there for around fifteen months.  If I make it thirty six months, Bart’s data shows I am almost certainly cured.  So I continue to take three nasty meds to (hopefully) ensure I remain in remission.  The odds at this point are very much in my favor.  Incidentally, I have a different blood cancer than what Nergal of Behemoth is battling, but a small part of the aggressive protocol I underwent consistent of two blood stem cell transplants that Nergal recently underwent.

So that’s it: healthy, working on new music with a great producer, and ready to deliver the goods!  (And on that note, by the way, Neil has also worked with Judas Priest – haha).

Thanks, as always, for your interest and support!

Best,

Nick

From Blabbermouth:

During a brand new interview with DJ JC Green of Metal Messiah Radio's "Heavy Metal Thunder" show, vocalist Russell Allen of New Jersey's progressive metal masters SYMPHONY X revealed that the band has set "Iconoclast" as the title of its eighth album, due later this year via Nuclear Blast Records.

When asked what stage of the recording/mixing process the new CD is in, Allen replied, "We are in post-production, so the album is pretty much almost done. At this point, mixes are being wrapped up and finalized and it's off to mastering and should be ready for release in a few months — definitely first quarter of 2011. We've got the artworks all done, we're taking pictures next week... all that good stuff. So everything's on track for release pretty soon."

Regarding the sound of "Iconoclast" and how it compares to that of 2007's "Paradise Lost", Russell said, "Sonically, it's in the realm of that one in a way, in terms of the sound of things; the guitar sound is a little different. Basically, the album is pretty intense — probably the most intense record we've ever done; it's chock-full of riffs — tons of great riffs. It's heavy, the music, but the singing is very melodic in terms of its... the choruses are real strong, the verses are real strong, but I'm singing aggressively — a lot of that going on — 'cause the topic is, again, very dark; you know, that's what we do. So the album's very powerful. And, of course, we do have one song that's like a little mini-epic, so to speak, and it's the lightest — a light, light, light song. So there is a contrast on the record of that one song that has that sort of 'Paradise Lost' feel to it; it's a ballad, I guess, if you wanna call it that."

He continued, "This album will contain a good body of work that harkens back to a lot of early metal — some early metal — and a lot of SYMPHONY X standards that you guys know already, and a little bit of a newer sound, too, here and there — just a newer direction. Some of the singing parts, I tried some more rhythmic things that I was hearing that sounded pretty cool, and some different things that I'm doing with my voice now that are a little more looking to the future of what we hear the music going. It's just the next progression for us, where we are as writers and stuff, but it's pretty intense — it's way more intense than 'Paradise Lost', if you can believe that."

When asked about the "Iconoclast" lyrical concept, Russell said, "It is basically just the idea of machines taking over everything and all this technology we put our society into pretty much being our demise. It's a story we were all familiar with, but we put our own spin on it. It's not a linear story in terms of... This is just the theme of the record, so all the songs are in that theme, but they're not connected in any sort of story way — there's no characters of any of that stuff — it's just a theme. Like [PINK FLOYD's] 'The Dark Side Of The Moon', it's really just a theme of the dark side of the moon — one song deals with death, the other one deals with time... You know what I mean?! So it's the same kind of thing. I'm not comparing the two albums by any means — don't misunderstand me — but in terms of the idea of a concept, so to speak, the concept is there, but it's not a story record — not like [2002's] 'The Odyssey', where the song 'The Odyssey' is that story."

The entire interview will air on "Heavy Metal Thunder" in the next couple of weeks.

SYMPHONY X will embark on a North American headlining tour in April/May. Support on the trek will come from Seattle's NEVERMORE, Sweden's SOILWORK, Boston's POWERGLOVE and Montreal's BLACKGUARD. The trek will launch on April 21 in Philadelphia and wrap on May 22 in West Springfield, Virginia.

SYMPHONY X's last album, 2007's "Paradise Lost", has sold over 60,000 copies in North America.

Formed in 1994 in New Jersey, SYMPHONY X has seven studio albums and one live album to its credit.

Today I closed the writing process for the new album. All songs are now ready, and we will now focus on details before entering studio in beginning of February. The title for the new album has been set to: THE BOTTOM DEEP.

Eliran Kantor (www.elirankantor.com) has been chosen to create the artwork for the album. Release will be in June 2011, and we are really exited about it all.

Update from JP

Hey everyone. Wanted to quickly let you all know what's been happening lately.

I know that the big question is "Who is the new DT drummer?" I also realize that some people are getting frustrated waiting for the news. Well, auditions went great and we do have someone but we are spending some time getting everything in order before making an official announcement. Let me just say that we are all incredibly excited about our choice and just bursting at the seams to let the world know!

The Long Island Music Hall of Fame induction ceremony was a lot of fun and truly an incredible honor. DT is so thankful to the board to be recognized in that way.

I've been demoing tunes for my next solo record at my home as well as writing and cataloguing riffs and ideas for the new DT album. We'll be in the studio come January which is already just around the corner. Can't wait!

Been working on and developing a few new signature products which will be released soon. Stay tuned for details. Also, I've recorded a few demo videos for some of the gear companies I endorse which should be available to view soon. The one for the Zoom Q3HD is already up.

Besides that, just practicing, lifting and taking care of the family. Life is great. I hope this message finds everyone well and again, thanks so much for the tremendous support.

Odd Logic

Final tracks are being completed for the 4th studio album "Over The Underworld", a full length album meant to sync over the classic vampire vs werewolf movie Underworld. Artwork is complete by the great Prog Metal artist Thomas Ewerhard. Final tracking, mixing, mastering, and packaging should be complete no later than March/April. The project has taken longer than expected because of the challenge a "sync to movie" endeavor poses. It's been a blast none-the-less. Also, there are rumors that Odd Logic may be playing live for the first time, sometime next year. Stay tuned for updates.

Here's the latest press release from Evergrey

Occasionally a musician has to take a step back into the past to develop artistically. Tom Englund, guitarist and vocalist with Swedish rock group Evergrey, took this risk and reorganised his artistic environment. “The most recent Evergrey line-up had reached a point where we no longer had fun as a group,” he confesses, adding: “So we went our separate ways to save our friendship. There were no angry words, and we’re still friends privately.”

Naturally, the decision to break up wasn’t easy for these
long-standing friends, especially for Englund and his remaining
keyboardist, Rikard Zander, for whom a continuation of Evergrey was never called into question. Yet they both had to face a new challenge: “In
the beginning, we weren’t sure whether we’d be able to write a new
album without the wealth of experience that the previous line-up brought
in. But after Rikard and I had composed a full three numbers during the
first week, we felt that was a real coup.”

Listeners will feel this positive energy throughout Glorious Collision, the band’s eighth studio album, which is due for release on 28 February 2011 (Germany: 25 February 2011; USA/Canada: 22 February 2011) on Steamhammer/SPV. A dynamic goody bag featuring the most diverse material ever released on an Evergrey album. “This may sound like a contradiction in view of our personnel situation, but Rikard and I have allowed more influences on Glorious Collision than ever before. Some elements on Glorious Collision
are classic rock, based on a metal format, sometimes the tracks are
quiet and haunting, sometimes wild, demanding and gripping.”

This diversity is also expressed in the instrumentation of this
extremely dynamic studio production which presents the new band members Marcus Jidell (guitar), Hannes Van Dahl (drums) and Johan Niemann (bass). “It’s great to hear what a breath of fresh air Marcus, Johan and Hannes have brought into the band,” Englund enthuses. “Although
the entire material, except for two songs to which Marcus wrote and
contributed on the compositional side, had already been decided when we
started recording, they all left their own, very personal mark on this
album.”
The great experience of Jidell and Niemann, who have worked with acts such as Royal Hunt and Therion,
among others, and have now contributed lots of positive energy together
with the 20-year-old drummer, Van Dahl, can be felt throughout the
album.
