Neil'n'Geddy is my favourite, otherwise I'm not sure. Somehow I've never thought of Collins and Rutherford as a combo or "rhythm section", they've both played more than that one instrument... the Tool guys are certainly mindboggling. Others, hmm... Butler / Ward?

Janick Top / christian vander, the guys from Mudvayne, and the guys from Koenjihyakkei.
the top right now for me, but who knows what'll happen in a week or two.
havent listened to mudvayne in a while but i might give LD 50 a spin. the bass is incredible.

Exactly why I too felt they were worthy of a mention .
Mike Clarke, although not the 'chopiest' of players, also combined very well with Hiseman in COLOSSEUM as mentioned above in my list. Hiseman is/was a wonderful player and was still using the double bass drum set up, at least on the COLOSSEUM DVD which, by the way, is excellent [ that reunion concert, the exact name of which escapes me. Live in Cologne or something ].
Nice to see rhythm sections getting due recognition in this thread - the 'engine room' of any band worth its salt, without doubt.

oh and Jon Hiseman/John Mole, organic yet painfully tight, and any bassist that could keep up with Hiseman and do tasty chops has to be damn good

[When you look at some the Isle of Whyte live footage all those years ago, and compare them with some of the others featured [ e.g. Moody Blues ], there is just no comparisin. Wonderfully tight and strong ].

I'm rather enjoying Bussonnet/Jeand'heur at the moment - they're the best thing about that F. Thollot album ('Contact'), and I cannot wait for my just-ordered One Shot CD to arrive... the samples I heard were ace.  (I can imagine revisiting this thread for shopping list ideas at some point. I can take or leave guitar solos and singing, but oooohh, rhythm section rhythm section rhythm section!! An excellent rhythm section does it for me, every time!  )

since no German musicians have been mentioned so far (as usual):
Helmut Hattler (bass) / Jan Fride (drums) of Kraan
Peter Kühmstadt (bass) / Mani Neumeier (Guru Guru). also Hattler / Neumeier and Hartwig / Neumeier
Gerald Luciano Hartwig (bass) / Freddy Setz (drums). very short-lived (for the band of Embryo guitarist Roman Bunka), but nevertheless excellent.
I could name more, but will leave it to that.
other excellent rhythm sections are Vander / Top and Moerlen / Howlett; I won't name those that have been mentioned dozens of times already

I've only read one comment about glover and paice, they were really important to the deep purple sound and i think one complements the other perfectly, especially live, (made in japan, in the improvisation and lengthy version of space truckin')

Let me be a little different and humble, but sensible:
For me, without a doubt, the best rhythm section in recent years is the one of Pal Sovik and Olav Nygard from FRUITCAKE. AMAZING!!!
Also the one of Mark Zonder and Joe DiBiase from FATES WARNING. EXQUISITE!!!
