Eloy for me by far, Nektar second, i can't stand The Doors. Pink Floyd , Hawkwind and Iron Butterfly to me are good bands with good albums but some of them are terrible boring and repatative.
1.Eloy
2.Nektar

When I see a Psyche thread, I expect to seee Psyche bands, in this case, besides The Doors and Iron Butterfly, there's no essentially Psyche band, not even Pink Floyd, being that their most inportant output is not even related.
Some great Psyche bands have been mentioned, but from the lesser know:
1.- Elmer Gantry's Vevet Opera
2.- The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band
3.- Swetwater
4.- Arthur Brown
5.- Vanilla Fudge
6.- The Fifth Dimension
7.- Zager and Evans
8.- The Mamas & the Papas
9.- HP Lovecraft
10.- United States of America
Lots of bands where to choose from. But from the list...The Doors.

They may not be the best of the lot but The Doors for me. My first love in music.

The Doors? ok
Hawkwind? spacey for sure, but not psych
Eloy? not by any stretch of the imagination
Pink Floyd? during 1967 and 1968 I consider psych, after that.. not
Iron Butterfly? ok
Nektar? First album.. maybe.... but not after that.
so my answer is, from this list, The Doors. Not from this list I would choose Airplane or Hendrix.. |
hm, I personally think "psychedelic" and "spacey" are interchangeable terms

i agree 100%. or, probably, "spacey" album can´t be "psychedelic" because some planet or a spaceship is mentioned in the lyrics?
for example, Steve Hiilage´s "L" album is really "spacey" but that masterpiece of Prog (but underrated an album, imho) is really "psyhedelic" stuff in the same time, especialy when you are reading these liner notes that "Lunar Musik Suite", an awesome epic, were recording at the nights of fool moon only.
its same thing if someone says that "2001: A Space Odissey" the movie is "science fiction" stuff only, i mean, to say there´s nothing of "psychedelic" because that is the movie about one space journey with no happy end!

You should have left Pink Floyd out of this one... I mean, the big ones always get all the votes. It's like someone did with the "favorite debut" poll, he left KC out because it would get all the votes, so it's more interesting to see how the others do.

I voted for The Doors, just because I don't particularly find Pink Floyd that psychedelic (maybe they just aren't random enough...) and I don't know much of their early stuff.

I voted Eloy becasue there is nothing trippier than listening to Arnold Schwarznegger sing Pink Floyd, even if it's a bad trip. If the Dukes of Stratosphere had been on the list, I would have voted for them.

Pink Floyd were really psychedelic only until Ummagumma. bands which are obviously missing on the list are Gong, Amon Düül 2 (at least in their early phase), Ash Ra Tempel, Can, the Cosmic Jokers, early Tangerine Dream and many more Krautrock bands (Anima, Annexus Quam, the first two albums of Kraftwerk, Agitation Free, Cluster, even Dzyan were in a way psychedelic). Nik Turner solo is very psychedelic (mostly in the vein of early Hawkwind, but his first solo album "Xitintoday" is something completely different and highly recommend for all psychedelic fans. also a band like "High Tide", although listed under "Heavy Prog", have their psychedelic aspects, even on their first two very heavy albums, but especially on their third "Precious Cargo", which is completely devoid of the heavy elements but a very psychedelic session instead

I voted for The Doors caus thier self titled debut and strange days are 2 of the best albums ever, and both loaded with dark psychedelia. Pink Floyd comes as a close second.
