Astor Piazzolla appreciation thread

Tango: Zero Hour is absolutely superb. I don't think Piazzolla is prog by any means, but anyone who likes Salle Gaveau should find much to like in this album.  You shouldn't let the 'tango' tag stop/fool you from exploring his music; he's so much more than that.

	^ I think that this guy (Yo-Yo Ma) has selected the more 'tango' music of Piazzolla and presented it his way However, Astor Piazzolla is considered a tango musician in Greece, at least from the few some friends - familiar with the scene - tell me

	well, the thing is that the music of Piazzolla isn't really tango. You tell an old argentinian tango-purist that it is tango, and he/she will not agree. This uses elements of tango, mixing it up with classical music and jazz to create different forms of expressions (though I think he made more traditional tango in the distant past)

	I have an album called Soul of Tango performed by Yo-Yo Ma and I find it great ! such passionate tango music and a very clear and sharp sound unfortunately this is all I have related to Astor Piazzolla

	Well, I am from Argentina and I should be ashamed of hearing only one album and the song "Adios Nonino". However, that album I am familiar with is called "Tango: Zero Hour" and might be among the most passionate albums there are in contemporary music and I might go as far and say it's possibly the most beautiful album in Argentina of the ones I have heard. Yes, he is not technically "prog", but the music is very elaborate, deep and complex. 3 songs in this album I own pass the 9 minute mark, so it's not a bunch of simple tango danceable music. It's not danceable. It is dynamic as it can change from joyous energetic music to melancholy to pensive slowness with perfect coherence. It also is more like fusion music as it uses elements of classical music and jazz. Prog lovers would probably enjoy "Concierto para Quinteto" the most as it is the most dynamic, and 'epic-like' track. Anyone heard "Tango: Zero Hour"? You shouldn't miss it. I even went to amazon and from the 35+ reviews there are, none of them is less than 5-stars. It can't be that bad, right? Edited by Zitro - December 07 2007 at 19:04
